Hello, I'm new to posting around here and just started lurking around the forums. My sugery is scheduled for June 28th! Yay! I'm weighing in right now at 437 lbs. My word! I'm so glad I am getting ready for this surgery. I hate that I have ate my way this big. I'll be updating in here and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you. We all need support. :)

Hi Heather,

I started my pre-surgery liquid diet at 415 so I totally know how you feel. Today I am 392. Dont worry, we can do this. I was just banded on 5-23-2011. Good luck!

I've been hearing lately that a lot of people don't lose that much with the band. That it is more for people who have 100 lbs or less to lose. Anyone else hear about this???

I'm so glad it's now June!!! I'm ready to start my pre-op diet, I'm getting tired of food! Crazy but soooo true!

Thanks for the replys. :) It's good to know I am not alone.

Hi Heather!! I began at 393 and my surgeon never had a concern about me losing over 100 pounds with the band. Actually my surgeon is banded and I believe he lost about 100 pounds all though I could never ask. I'd think so from the pictures though. :) Anyhow, it's all up to you and what you do with the band. I know I was pretty bad at first, especially after I healed from surgery and wanted to eat everything I could get my hands on. I felt like I had to work hard at not eating terribly until I could get my first fill. I did get my first fill in May and it has helped so much with only 3cc in my band. I get my second fill next Wednesday and I'm so looking forward to it. The pain sucks but it's very quick and I'll be honest, the band rocks! It's made such a difference in my life, I've begone eating healthier and it feels natural. I seriously used to be ridiculous with my eating. I'd go to Wendy's or some other fast food daily for lunch and hide the fact. Now I naturally go to the cafeteria and grab a salad or bring something healthy for lunch. I know everyone's different but the band is just wonderful. Congratulations on getting your surgery date and joining us some as a bandster!

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I started my journey on april 8 , 2010 . I weighed 436 the week before surgery and as of today I weigh 288 so you can lose good with the band. It is work every day, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I have slowed down some now on the weight loss but atleast it is still going down. Congradulations on becoming a bander.

I can't thank you guys enough for replying. It's given me hope to read the responses. I'm on day 3 of my pre-op diet and feel like I'm going nuts. I just want to eat. I want to soothe myself with food. :( This is a hard addiction to fight and overcome.

The pre-op diet was HELL for me. I cried, I was moody, I was tired, Ugh...

It was completely psychological. I wanted to eat so badly but I kept reminding myself that I needed to stick to the liquid diet so my liver would shrink. I had to avoid a birthday brunch with my friends because the temptation was just too great. I never was extremely "hungry" I just wanted to eat. This web site helped me a lot.

I am now almost 4 weeks out and am eating Protein, fruits and veggies. I am so much happier. I have lost 35 pounds since May 9th (when I started my pre-op diet). You can do this!!

Let me know how things go!

I had about 150 to lose and am now just about at goal. Although it has become extremely difficult for me to lose now. I think with that band, you get out what you put in. I put in a lot of work and have been able to lose a lot of weight fairly quickly. I am at the gym 5/6 days a week and find that when I dont go, I feel bad for not going. I truly enjoy working out now. It is totally possible to lose over 100lbs!!

Congrats on your date and best of luck.

I was banded Feb 10, 2011 and I have lost 75 pounds in 4 months you can totally do it! I too thought that I was the only one on here that needed to lose more then 200 pounds so you are not alone. In 4 months I already feel so much better. However I have a really hard time seeing it in pictures but I have had to buy new clothes for the summer and some of those are already getting big. The post off diet is not fun but it helps get you off the the right start. Follow the rules and it will pay off.

From personal experience, I can tell you that you can lose a great deal of weight with the lap band. I started out at 350 and lost 175 over the next 2.5 years. I'd also like to comment that while I tried hard, I was far from perfect and overate at holidays, vacations and celebrations like all the normal people on the planet.

I'm not sure where the idea comes from that you won't lose much weight, but the fact is, you will lose much faster than someone with only 50 lbs to lose. It makes me crazy that some docs discourage those of us with 150+ lbs when the fact is the band works well. I'm glad my doctor was a believer!

I really, REALLY, REALLY hope that I'm one that the band works for and loses a lot of weight. I'm seeing how much of a struggle it already is. I'm just about 13 days post-op and I'm eating Soup when I'm not even hungry. I'm eating because it tastes good and I'm stirring in a bunch of melted cheese. Which roasted red pepper tomatoe soup with a lot of melted cheese in it is sooooo good. I'm eating about 3/4 of a cup or so at a time then I get up and get another. Sigh... This is hard! Already..so...sooooo...hard. I think it's because I may be about 2 weeks out but I'm also at 4 weeks with NO binging. I believe that is the main thing that wants to keep coming back. Of course with the band I can't do that. Who ever thought I'd try and overeat on soup? One day at a time...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
