Need a Good Scale Before I Go Crazy!

Recommended Posts

I'm trying not to become a slave to the scale, but I would like to track my weight loss progress without having to go to the doctor all the time. I bought a Biggest Loser scale for $20. The user reviews said it was good, but my experience has been horrible. Just today, mine claims that I've gained 7 pounds since this morning. Yes, I had lunch at a restaurant with friends, but I didn't eat THAT much! :(

Can anyone recommend a good scale that will accommodate up to 350 pounds? I'd like to spend no more than $50, but I'll spend more if I have to. I just don't want to go crazy from dealing with wildly inaccurate readings. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You need to stop weighing more than once a day as your weight fluctuates naturally throughout the day. It doesn't matter what scale you buy the same will always happen.

You should pick a time and weigh at the same time. Generally it is not recommended to weigh more than once a week but I still do it daily, that is one habit I can't break. The best time to weigh is first thing in the morning, before you have had anything to eat or drink and before you shower. That way you will get a more accurate indication of any gains or losses. Be aware though that sometimes you will gain from day to day just because of Fluid , hormones etc which is why the weekly reading is the more important one.

I bought a Taylor scale from Amazon.com. I don't remember how much I paid for it, but I doubt it was more than 30.00, as I am frugal.

The increase of 7lbs might be due to sodium in restaurant foods. Give yourself a day or two, drink lots of Water and see what the scale says.

Oh man... I know what you're saying about those stupid scales. Even though I try to limit myself to once a day in the mornings, sometimes I'll get on and off my scale several times in a row - and it can fluctuate as much as 7 pounds within 10 seconds. It's a digital scale and although I can't be sure, I think it may be posessed. I found out that our HR department has one of those old fashioned doctor's scales with the sliding medal number thingies. So I weigh there a few times a week to find out my "real" weight. Of course - I could never afford one of those kinds of scales for my own home, unless I luck out at a yard sale!

Good luck finding a good one!

I have been using a scale that is vey good and accurate. It is a homedics scale beige in color, it looks like a heavy piece of ceramic tile. I have had it for about 5years and works wonderfully, it is sometimes maybe a lb off, very close to professional scales. It range from about 50 dol or below depending on store, or coupons used. i bought mine from bed bath and beyond for cheaper, but you may be able to get one at www.homedics.com or online. it is 59.99 there free shipping and the model number is sc-475. I hope this helps, i love my scale. thanks Tina

Try to weight only once a day in the AM. Your weight can change a lot during the day. Keep in mine a Gallon of Water weighs 8.9/lbs!

so if you are drinking a lot of water plus your food! the scale will change a lot. I use a digital scale don't remember the name was probably $30 or so

This is the scale that I bought 2 years ago on Amazon. I LOVE it, or as much as I can love a scale. I weigh every day in the morning, at the same time every day. I only count on Wednesday morning, but if I move up or down, I look to see what I had the day before, and if I slipped on something, then I know to be careful that day. I don't let the scale rule me, but it helps me keep on track and stay honest.

Here is the link on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808/ref=wms_ohs_product_T2

What everyone else said. It's not your scale, if you weigh in the am and pm your weight will be higher in the pm due to eating, drinking etc

Thank you so much everyone. I figured my weight would fluctuate throughout the day, but I was only expecting two to three pounds. I went ahead and returned the Biggest Loser scale because it was tainted in my eyes. But I will be sure to have much more reasonable expectations for the next scale I buy.

@ Ross the Boss: I had no idea a gallon of Water weighed that much! I know the containers seem kind of heavy, but I never thought about putting that weight into your body.

@ Packers Fan: My scale was doing the same thing! I think I would have left well enough alone if it didn't give such different readings in such a short amount of time. That's what made me start thinking that it was a piece of junk. Since I'm disciplining myself to eat better and exercise, then I guess I can use that same discipline to quit jumping on the scale all the time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
