Lost 77 lbs, still feel "fat"?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just a question for whomever is kind enough to reply.

I lost 77 lbs so far, 6.5 months since surgery. While I am certainly thrilled at the numbers on the scale, I still have quite a way to go.

Most of the time I feel great, LOVE the weight loss. But other times - I still 'feel' just as 'fat' as I did before the surgery.

Any one else experience this, and if you've hit goal, do you still feel 'fat' every now and then?

I haven't lost as much as you have, so I commend you on your accomplishment. However, I just came from a get-together with people who hadn't seen me since before I had surgery. They all said I've lost weight, but for some reason I don't believe it. I feel like they were just being nice because they know I had WLS. So while I am still fat, I'm not exactly excited about what I've lost so far because I know I have so much more to lose. I know that's not the best attitude to have, but that's how I feel. So I can totally relate to what you're saying.

Obviously you have done well and obviously you are not as fat as prior to surgery. But you did say you still have a way to go and if your BMI is in a range that is overweight or obese or whatever then yes you are still fat. I don't mean that in a nasty way but it explains why you still have those fat days.

I think being female makes it worse as well. We are never satisfied, we will always find fault with our bodies. I am at goal and well within a healthy BMI range but I look at my stomach and to me it looks gross. All fat and blobby, nothing like those perfect washboard stomachs I see on TV and in magazines all the time!

So don't get down. Think of how well you have done and congratulate yourself on that.It is not like there was a time limit and that you have now run out of time. You will continue to lose weight and to look and feel better every day.

I have lost 142lb and am within my drs goal for me and yet I still feel fat. I look in the mirror and still see that fat woman looking back. Yet I will see a pic of me and think who in the world is that skinny woman. I think it just takes a while for your brain to catch up.

I lost about 120lb, have a BMI of 20 at 5ft 10 and I still feel fat many days. I have gained 7 b very needed pounds after having been ill and its driving me crazy, I'm every bit as much obsessed with that as I was with 120lb. I dont think it ever goes away but my problem now is more resisting becoming TOO thin, because no amount is ever enough for me, I could always be a bit thinnner, yet looking at photos of myself three or four months ago I lookedabsolutely awful, like I'd come out of a concentration camp. Yet I still want to go back there, simply to prove I'm in control. Its definitely a complex issue and my challenge now is allowing myself to maintain this healthier weight without trying to lose it again.

My problem is I'm so tall, taller than some men too and it still makes me feel big. I think I'm striving to feel petite and that is just simply never going to happen.

I know exactly how you feel. I still feel fat. And by medical standards I still am. Am I a lot healthier than when I began? Yes. Am I a lot skinnier? Yes. But I still feel fat because I have a long way to go to be in a normal BMI. Congratualtions on your success this far. Keep going! We will get there eventually.

I dont think this one ever goes away.

I had to see a dietician yesterday (other issues non lapband related) and she looked over my food diary and clucked at the low calories and described me as "slight" (sheesh, I'm five ten, a giant, lol). I'm thinking "are you kidding, look at these love handles". I had a Tummy Tuck three months ago and now have washboard abs, but I see the love handles, the thighs, the old lady buttocks. I have barely looked at my new stomach. It wasnt bad in the first place, I had the TT for reconstructive purposes following other surgeries. My BMI is 20.

However, it was 19 this time last year. I was very sick. And I hate hate hate that I've put on weight again. I feel like a fat piggie.

It really is totally stupid. But its just part of being female I think. I can look at my body and feel satisfied sometimes. But I dont think there's a woman alive that really feels this way consistently. And there's always someone who I think looks better, is more petite, slimmer than me and I feel like an ox again.....

Iim guessing that some people feel fat no matter what because they see and have to deal with their bodies 24/7 and they dont feel "healthy." Feeling " healthy "is just not what i felt 47 lbs ago. I now feel just a little overweight but not "fat" in a bad, negitive way. i think its all in an individuals mindset. i still have about 40-50 lbs to go, but i appreciate the nice compliments i get, and know i feel MUCH "healthier !". Does this make sense to anyone ??In other words i dont feel because i feel so good !!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
