I have a medication question..

Recommended Posts

I tried my pharmacist but he was no help. 10 days ago I started a psych medication called Seroquel XR. It can't be cut in half and it makes you extremely sleepy, dizzy, dopey at first. To get rid of those effects you have to keep taking it daily so your body will adjust.

So here I am, too tight and I can't get an unfill until Monday. This pill is a little larger than a Tylenol capsule shaped tablet. Do I try to take with some coffee or warm Water or skip it? If I skip it it maybe Tuesday before I can take it again and by then I'm afraid I will super sleepy again. The sleepiness was just starting to get 50% better.

I realized after I posted this that it's a dumb question and I should just skip it but I just now got to the point where it's NOT kicking my butt all day. I hate to go back to that.

can you crush it and mix it with a drink?

Try putting it between 2 spoons and crush them together like you are stacking them.

They can't be crushed, split or chewed. They have to be swallowed whole because they are extended release meds. If I split or crush them at all then they will be immediate release instead of extended release.

The best person to have answered this question would have been the prescribing physician. Maybe call your local emergency room physician to see if they can give you some direction.

Spoiltmom,

My advice is to ask your doctor for an alternative medication. You are spot on, on the fact that these tablets cannot be modified. Make sure you tell your physician about your 'problem' swallowing. Ideally you want a tablet that is breakable into parts. An example of this is clonazepam. Patients are able to break them into fourths and this reduces the dose and the negative side effects quite a bit.

There are always options.

Best,

Dr. JSA
