Koreaman 0 Posted January 20, 2006 Since I live and work in Korea I decided to have the surgery done here instead of (USA, Mexico, Europe, Australia, etc.) as I didn't want to risk the long flights after surgery. I did much research and even though this surgery is not common in Korea I very much trusted the surgeon even though he had only performed about 20 band operations. As he is a very experienced surgeon (liver, stomach, kidmeys, etc.), I felt if something went wrong that he would be experienced enough to handle the situation. He also spoke English which was a very big plus. He required me to stay in the hospital the night before and two nights after the surgery which I had no problem with as it gave me an added sense of comfort knowing that there were many medical professionals at my disposal should something go wrong. As it turned out, everything has gone very well up until now. I experienced very little pain (no pain meds) and had no other side effects. I am very surprised at the small size of the incisions. It's been 9 days since the surgery and the scars are barely noticable. I have two sisters who had the surgery done in the US and as such am very informed as to the issues I may face as far as dealing with my hunger, but I am committed to make this work. As my problem has been eating too much too fast, I feel the band will definately help me control this. I was on liquids 2 weeks before the surgery and will be on them for another 10 days or so before going to mushies. I weighed 287 before starting this journey, lost 15 pounds before the surgery, was up 5 pounds 1 day following the surgery and have lost 10 pounds since then. I spent a lot of time reading through this forum before making the final decision to get this done. It has really been beneficial for me and I hope that I will be able to provide some inspiration and guidance for others. I know it's unlikely, but if anyone needs any information on getting this done in Korea please feel free to contact me. By the way, the cost including 3 nights in the hospital was about $8,000. Fills are $20.00. Thanks and best wishes to all of you!
kabeerah 0 Posted January 20, 2006 It's great hearing stories of this procedure done other than in the West. I plan on having mine done in Saudi for reasons similar to yours. My doc has only done three but the doc who trained him and will be there has done 5000+. It's not strange to know that obesity is a probablem in the Middle Easy (my dov said over 65% of Kuwaitees are overweight), but I will say it seems odd to hear of this being done in Oreintal countries, like Korea and Japan (read on another board about an American getting her's done there).
