Hey,

So yesterday was my first day of pre-op diet. I am on a two week Optifast diet, as well as I can have non-starchy vegetables. Yesterday wasn't too bad, I actually didnt feel overly hungry...just tired. Today it is almost lunch time and I am starting now to feel hungry, but get another shake right away..

I know I am going to get tired of the shakes..but I know I can stick with it. I am just so ready to do it and excited.

Is anyone else on diet right now too? Any suggestions on how to make the veggies at least a little more exciting? I am also feeling very tired today..no energy..a bit of a headache. Will walking or doing some type of exercise now help this too?

Any tips on how to make the next two weeks a little easier would be great! Thanks!

Hi. I am on the pre-op diet as well. I can have the protien shakes and unlimited fruits and veggies. I work out a lot and I am doing a 5K on Sunday and this is just not enough calories to keep me going. I called my doctor's office and they told me to do the best I can with it and if I do have to eat something other than fruits and veggies, make it a non-fat, non-sugar choice. I have had small serviings of cottage cheese and egg beaters.

What I find is that everyone one here is on some type of different pre-op requirement. Some do two weeks, while other only have to do one. Some patients don't have the pre-op diet requirement at all. Some are all liquids, some get a low cal high protien meal once a day. I guess what I am getting to is that the pre-op diet is designed to shink your liver and get you into a lower calorie eating mode. I think if you do the best you can and need to veer a litle , in a healthy way, it's all good. Just my honest opinion.

Good luck and it does get easier as you go!

My husband is having his surgery tomorrow and has been on a liquid diet with Protein shakes 3 times a day. He is doing really well so far. I am having my surgery June 22. To be supportive of my hubby, I started having Protein Shakes 2 times a day and a small sensible, low in fat, sugar and calories, meal for dinner. I am having a problem with headaches myself. I have found that it is due to low blood sugar. I have found that a real life saver, not sugar free, relieves the headache right away. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
