Is or was anyones post op diet this extreme?

Recommended Posts

I know all Doctors are different but I have talked to a few people who have had the band surgery and haven't had a post op diet this restricted. For the first 2 weeks Clear liquids. Week 3 and 4 is full liquids. Then after that a high Protein low carb diet. I have heard others talk of a mush diet but my doctor doesn't say anything about it. I had surgery Thursday and I haven't been hungry much and yesterday I only got 25 calories for the whole day and so far 25 today. The nurse today wanted me to get more calories but after 2 weeks of a pre op diet that was pretty much just Clear Liquids and Protein shakes I'm over the whole clear liquids. I know I can eat but I'm over the broth and sugar free Jello and ice pops. I would love to go on a sugar free soft diet now and feel like something would stay in my stomach vs just wash right through. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm being a baby but I kinda want something that was somewhat like food. Like pudding or yogurt. BTW I can't even have the left over Protein Shakes. I cant have them till week 3 and 4. I would like a little substance in my stomach.

THANKS

Hello Michael, congrats on your new life! Yes, my diet was that extreme. Infact, my surgeon requires 2 days clear and 2 days full liquid after a fill. I was hungry, too! It feels like forever, but you can get through it if you want to. Try protein Water, I think Special K makes some. Good luck. I am also in Florida. I have been banded for 18 months.

Did you have Dr. Grossbard, by the way? Karen

You are correct all doctors are different. My diet was a bit different than yours. After my surgery the 1st week was liquids only, 2nd week was mushy food, 3rd week was soft food, and 4th week was all foods, but I had to introduce 1 new food at a time so I knew if my body could handle it or not.

I would follow the doctors diet plan he setup for you. Being that all patients are different sizes and conditions the surgeons diet is most valuable.

Remember take things one day at a time. Also call your doctor whenever you need guidance, it helps.

Wow that is pretty extreme. My surgeon requires two DAYS of clear liquids, followed by two weeks of full liquids, then two weeks of mushies and finally solids.

Ok I was on the same post op diet however pudding and yogurt were allowed during my full liquids along with watery oatmeal and applesauce. I'm not sure why the Protein Shakes haven't been allowed but that was were the majority of my cal intake has come from (I'm 4 weeks post op). Just started eating solids on friday. The Protein is crazy important so you may wanna run that by your Dr. again just to be sure. Make sure you are also drinking at least 64 oz of Water. That will help make you feel full. Good luck

My post op diet was not as strict as that. First 3 days post op was Clear Liquids, followed by 2 weeks full liquids. Then 2 weeks of full liquids with 1/2 cup mushie/pureed food twice a day. Finally 3 weeks of soft food before hitting the solid stuff.

Mine was less strict than that. I'm surprised you're not supposed to have your Protein Drinks right now. I'd call the doctor and say you're having a hard time with the clear liquids and see if they're willing to let you add something chewable. I don't know how your body could function for 2 weeks on less than 100 calories per day- you must feel so sluggish.

Mine is that strict as well. I'm about to start a 2 week liquid pre- op diet (Only clear liquids and Protein shakes- no milk, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles). My post- op diet is 2 weeks of clear liquid (NO Protein shakes!!) and then I graduate to mushies... Nervous... but excited!

Mine was that severe as well....

Two weeks of clear liquids... Two protien shakes after day three

Two weeks full liquids....

Two weeks of mushies...

I am at the end of phase 1 and can't wait to get to the next stage....

Oh and to make it all better... When I get a fill it is back on clears for 2 days fills for 2 days and mushies for 2 days!

But in my opinion it is a SMALL price to pay!
