Not feeling as full a month after lap band and before first fill

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends,

I have a question....I was banded on April 21, 2011 and when I drank and/or ate I would get full very quickly. I could eat 1/2 cup of food and fill full.

Now, almost a month after surgery I don't get full as fast, can eat cup/cup and a half of food.

Is this because the swelling is going down around my band and am needing my first fill?

Has anyone ever experienced this before their first fill?

Yes, it's because the swelling is going down. Right now your band is loosely around your stomach causing little or no change.

I am feeling that exact same way. I have an appointment next Thursday and hoping I get a fill.

Yes. The swelling has gone down so you can eat more...that said, my meals are normally 1-1 1/2 cups and I have always lost steadily.

I don't believe you need a fill as of yet. I felt that way as well when the swelling went down after my surgery. I ALSO eat 1- 1/2 cups of food and am full and have seen steady loss.

Read this article because it talks about the "Honeymoon" stage -that first month. I find some things in the article interesting-like not eating until you are full (stopping right before that feeling).

What an informative article! Thanks for sharing it. The lesson I take away is that by routinely measuring your intake, you won't need to rely on the band to give you that "full" feeling. My plan will be to slowly eat what I have measured out and wait for ten minutes then reassess my hunger. This is definitely going to be an experiment in learning how to eat again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
