3 days post op - dry heaves and constant chest pain

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm three days post op, and had been feeling surprisingly okay until today - no gas pain, nausea etc. But this morning, I woke up at 4am with really violent dry heaves - had there been anything down there, I'd definitely have been sick. It lasted for about an hour, until I managed to get an anti-sickness med down.

Then, when I woke up a bit later, I had the most incredible pain in the middle of my chest, which I've now had all day. It hurts the most when I breathe in deeply, and every so often feels almost like a super painful spasm or something.

Does anyone have any idea what the pain is or how to relieve it? My mum has had me walking around all day which has actually made it worse, and I have stuck to my "small sips of liquid" post-op diet, so am kind of stumped!

I should also quickly say that I've tried painkillers and heartburn medication, but neither seemed to have any effect.

i had the exact same thing. my doctor's office prescribed anti-nausea meds and they did the trick. that nausea just came out of nowhere and scared the heck out of me. see if they will prescribe something for you. if not, you might be able to find an over the counter anti-nausea med, or perhaps ginger. also, chewing on gas x, or using the strips until the meds kicked in was helpful.

my esophagram showed that all the gas was in my stomach and that is why i was nauseated and having chest pains. i didn't have the regular gas pains that everyone else talked about here, like in my shoulders etc...it just went straight inside my belly.

what the other poster is saying really sounds about right... from other articles on the internet about laproscopic surgery... the gas that they inflate you with typically settles somewhere in your body, most commonly in your sholders... in my case on day three it all settled in my neck and not in the muscles but in the bones almost... I truly couldnt even hold my head up the pain was that bad... I used a heating pad and was able to get the preasure to disapate... try warm liquids, tea, hot broth, etc that should help, remember this is a different kind of gas, you cant burp or f___ this out... i wonder if a warm bath or walk around the block would help... its all about moving right now...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
