Having Band removed and getting bypass!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Well after almost 3 years of hell of almost constant vomitting, discomfort and pain, my band is coming out on May 23rd and I am having gastric bypass... The new doc that I see here in FL (I was banded in CA) says 60% of his business now is removing bands and revising to either the sleeve or bypass. I wish I would have known this 3 yrs ago and I would have had bypass to begin with. Well you live and learn. So off on a new journey for me. Wish me luck. Leah

Good luck, I hope it is the solution you are looking for.

Interestingly this came through last night on another group that I am subscribed to.

Hi, haven't posted in months and this probably isn't the place to post but I'm really depressed about my weight.

I had my band removed back in october and reverted to a gastric bypass in december last year. I lost 12 kilos over the first two months and since then I have lost nothing and have put on 3 kilos this month.

what do I do now? I have not been back to the surgeons again as I am too embarassed. I do not have any restriction when I eat, I dumped a few times at the beginning. I don't eat that badly or that much.. (sounds cliche I know!!) Where do you go once bypass does not do what you thought it would do. Are there any options left? Can you convert to a sleeve from here I have read you can but there isn't much out there on it.

I know I need to go back to my surgeon and I will.. just want to hear any thoughts that any one may have before I make myself do that.

Hi, Elcee;

That is a very odd post. There must be something else going on with that person, because it is nearly impossible NOT to lose weight with a bypass, if performed correctly. You would almost have to make a conscious effort to avoid losing weight....and Gaining? Yep, there is something else happening.

The Bypass is an extremely reliable procedure. Any difficulty experienced is usually at the OTHER end of the process. A small percentage of Bypass patients put weight back on, because they have not altered their eating habits.

Interesting. I wonder if they had their band removed because they did not lose any weight with it, and decided to try bypass. If so, it would appear that there is something pretty serious going on, metabolically.

To the original poster, best of luck to you. The gastric bypass is a very good choice for many people. In fact, it is the ONLY WLS that will work for a sigificant portion of WLS patients. But, you still have to do the work. And you HAVE to change your eating habits....that is a MUST. The weight can come off pretty quickly and easily, and it can give the patient a false sense that this is the way it will ALWAYS be, and whatever you eat will just sail right through you. It doesn't work quite that way, so just be prepared for that....but, it's a good thing. having to eat in a healthy manner is NEVER a negative!

S.

My insurance doesn't cover it, plus my mom had the sleeve over a year ago and now they want to change hers to bypass, I feel if I'm gonna do it again I'm going all the way.

I do wish you luck, but why not the sleeve?

Mimi

Spartan

I agree that it is odd. I was quite shocked when I read it as I thought that weight loss with a bypass was guaranteed. This is a genuine post, the poster is a genuine poster and she is obviously in trouble. I have no idea why.

I just thought it would be useful to post it to show another perspective .

Just found this on another of my message boards. From a different poster this time.

Re: gastric sleeve

Hi guys,

I was going to stay quiet here but figured it wouldn't be fair.

I had a band...lost all the weight and loved it

I had a problem and had a second band...not the same and gained weight

I had a BPD/DS (big and bad decision) and did not lose an ounce!!!! Copped all

the side effects!! Live with it daily!!!

I have third band and love it for the moment!! Hanging in there at 71 kgs down

from 126....it's all good.

Not any o9f of the surgeries are a miracle cure, we have to work with what we

get and hope for the best.

Maybe in a few years time I will look at sleeve, gastric bypass etc

But, I think all of know that no surgery, no matter what it is, is the miracle.

And we all need to do some work at the same time.

They all work differently for different people but we all must persevere! We are

all on the same side and want to lose weight.

Give it a chance.

I will say this...Every weight loss surgery is different. One surgery may work for one person and may not work for another. We each have to be open and honest and find out what are our issues that are causing us to be overweight and then with professional help, decide on a WLS. I picked Lapband. it has worked for me. A friend of mine decided to do it after seeing my success. It has not worked for her. She can't get her eating and portions under control. A colleague of mine asked me what was I doing to lose weight. I told her I had the lapband. She opened up to me and told me she had a gastric bypass 6 years ago. She is more than 300 pounds now. She says she lost most of the weight and then gained it all back. I don't know. I'm only 2 years and 9 months out. I don't know what life will be like for me in 6 years. I can only hope that I continue with my success as a bandster. I wish the original topic starter much success with your bypass. We should not get negative (not that I'm saying anyone has been on this thread) when someone switches from what we have (bands). We should be grateful they are still encouraged enough to fight and take other avenues to get the weight off.

Thank you for your replies...I am so happy that the band is working for others out in band land...I wish it would have worked for me. But as the prior posts prove some surgeries work for some and not others, I am a great example of that. The first 6 months after banding went off without a hitch, 50 lbs down then that's when the band started acting crazy, I couldn't have fills, I would vomit then it became weekly, then the port turned some, just one thing after another...I won't harp on the negatives but now off the my new journey Mon the 23rd of May.

Thanks for all your comments and words of support.

Well had my bypass surgery on 5/23/11, once inside my doctor said my lap band had adhered to my liver and my port was surrounded by adhesions so I had alittle more pain afterwards than most because of the extra work to remove the band. Thankfully, everything is fine with my liver. I am doin well and lost 17 lbs in weeks, won't weigh again till this comin Monday...I try to stay off the scale everyday and do it once a week. Things are good, I am feeling very positive about this surgery and my outcome, I also start the gym this Monday, ready to get back into the swing of things.

Thanks for all your comments.

Thank you so much for being brave enough to share your journey! I'm glad to see the surgery went well and you are on your way to recovery. Best of luck and please do continue to share your updates on the board. I've had a lot of trouble with my band and my original surgeon wanted me to convert to the bypass but my insurance wouldn't cover it and my new doctor believes I can be successful with the band and has made some adjustments. It is still a very slow, learning process but I'm trying to be patient. It makes me happy to hear you are having some success again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
