Nervous about being approved - need sleep study

Recommended Posts

I am just starting this journey and am fortunate that my insurance plan doesn't exclude bariatric surgery (Aetna). However, since my BMI is "only" 36, I need to have hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea as a co-morbidity. I have mild asthma but that doesn't count. My husband swears I have sleep apnea and I made my appt with the sleep disorders physician today (for June 10, earliest they could get me in!) I am so nervous that I will have the sleep study and it will show that I either don't have sleep apnea or just a mild case of it. I know it's crazy to want to have sleep apnea, but I really want to have this surgery.

I don't need to have a psych eval, but I do need to go through 90 days of nutrition counseling/exercise/pre surgery counseling. there is a great place here in south jersey that offers all of those things so that won't be a problem. I'm just really nervous about this sleep apnea thing. Now that I've decided I want to be banded and really believe that this is the tool taht will help me, I just want to do it now! Jumping through hoops stinks.

Sorry to vent, I'm just nervous. this is such a great site, I have learned so much already and look forward to learning even more.

I'm in the same boat. I too have Aetna and a starting BMI of 35. I have done the sleep study. I had a mild case, not "bad" enough for a cpap machine, but I still had several "episodes" during my sleep study. I have just finished the 3 month diet/excercise/nutrition program and am currently waiting to hear from Aetna. i have no other co - morbidities other than asthma, joint problems and back problems.

We sound alike, I have asthma and back pain too (wish Aetna would consider those)! How was your experience with the 90-day nutrition, etc. program? I'm a little nervous about that too. Thanks!

The 3 month diet plan wasn't too bad. I can't say I stuck with it 100 %, but i did try. I lost about 11 lbs, not great, but that is the reason I want the lap band cause I am not great on doing it on my own. :)

I am from Suth Jersey too! I also have Aetna. Unfortunately my BMI is 41 so I don't neeed co-morbities but You still have to jump through hoops. I had my first nutrition class this past Sat. I have also been cleared by psch.

I was wondering if everyone needs a sleep study? I sure hope not, its not easy getting to all these different appointments and work a full time job, with 2 kids.

HI Erika, fellow South Jerseyite :)

No, not everyone needs a sleep study. I need one because Aetna requires a co-morbidity since my BMI is between 35 and 40. You're right though, managing all of these appointments is tough. I met with my primary this morning, bloodwork tomorrow, surgeon and dietician next week, sleep disorders doctor and psych eval the following week.... yikes! At this point I am praying that I do have sleep apnea so Aetna will pay.

Have you chosen your surgeon? Mine is Dr. Adam Goldstein.

Lisa

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
