United Healthcare in California

Recommended Posts

So ive been going thru these journey that seems so endless. Started with the 1800 get thin people. Found out the were out of network for United Healthcare. Finally found a program / surgeon in network ( the n.e.w program) and so happy with them. had all my tests done. have sleep apnea, hypertension and gallstones. The new program said i would need a 3 month supervised diet, but nothing else was required . when i called UHC they said no, all i needed was a BMI over 40 or a BMI of 35 with 2 mobidities. Im over 40 btw....and now i happen to come across information for my job's health benefits, it said the requirements were BMI over 40, had to be 21 years old and 5 years of documented diagnosis of morbid obsesity. MY HEART FELL. i have been severly overweight for more than 8 years. But i don't have 5 years worth of documentation. And why wouldn't the new program tell me this if this was a requirement?? PLEASE HELP! I AM SO CRUSHED

I have UHC and the 5 years documentation was the most difficult part of it. Start with your doctors (all of them) and then think about any procedures you have had done where they documented your weight. I ran into an issue with doctors having purged my records but I remembered that I had a breast biopsy 5 years ago and was able to get the records from the hospital to complete the 5 years.

Good Luck!

If I were you I would see how much I could pull together...the more the better and then ask UHC what else they might be able to accept as proof...would dated pictures work? Signed statements from people? You may have to think outside the box to see if you can find a way to make it work.

I have UHC in NY and honestly if you call they have no idea what they are talking about. I asked them over and over again if I needed any sort of weigh ins or stuff like that and they kept telling me no until all my stuff was sent in, then all of a sudden I needed 6 months of weigh ins. Just try and get as much info as you can, they're pretty quick to approve which is a good thing.

I have UHC also and I want to be ahead of the game and have all of this information for my consulting appt. Should I wait or just go ahead and get it. If so, how does one get started? I have switched PCP at the beginning of the year. What do I say to my old primary? I need weight history for such and such? So I go to my GYN doctors? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
