My Surgeon and my Dietician want me completely off of caffeine by the time of surgery - I am probably 3 months out from surgery - and I am trying to wean myself off already..... I typically have 2 cups of coffee and a diet soda or regular soda every day.... without the coffee I am blinded by the headaches by 11am and having the soda is not touching the headaches at all............ how are others dealing with loss of caffeine or did your doctors not require that........?

My doctor required it, but I didn't actually do it until a few days before surgery huh.gif Don't tell! The headaches did go away after a few days. Do it now, before surgery so you don't have a raging headache when you're in the hospital. Trust me!

My doctor doesn't have a problem with bandsters drinking caffine, he actually has a coffee machine on the recovery floor :P

As for the headaches, I would try to slowly reduce your caffine amount and maybe try to take more Vitamins etc. I say this because I started getting headaches at the hospital after surgeries when I didnt have a coffee in the morning ( it is a habit to have benefiber and at least 2 coffees in the morning). One of the other patients suggested I continue to drink a coffee in the morning even at the hospital and that helped with my headaches but then it turned out that it was actually low Iron that was causing the headaches.

Now I take an Iron pill in the morning, and I haven't had a coffee in over a week!

I was going to be a smartass and suggest drinking coffee (that's how I get rid of caffeine headaches), but I realize that would just be cruel ;)

It seems like you have two options-- just white knuckle through the next week or so and they should go away, or wean more slowly in the morning-- do half-caf, then quarter caf, then no caf in your coffee in a gradual decline over a couple of weeks.

Do you see a chiropractor? I know a lot of people don't believe in chiropractic but then again a lot of people don't believe in lap band either. As strange as it may seem, when I get a headache I go straight to his office and have him adjust my neck. The headache is gone before his hands are off of my neck. EVERY TIME!!! An upper back adjustment also alleviates the shoulder blade pain from the gas after surgery.

Poor you! Caffeine headaches are the worst.

I was never told to get off coffee. I do not add anything to mine so there are no unwanted calories!

Sorry wish I could help.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
