need to loose 50 lbs should i have the surgery ??????

I have a BMI of 30 and need to lose about 40-45 lbs. I'm self pay and it's all worth it to me! I'm tired of trying and failing. I'm going to be 40 in a few months and it seems like my metabolism died this past year! So anything to get my health n fitness back! I'm schedu.ed to complete my 2nd triathlon this summer and it would be a lot easier with less fat on my frame! I say go for it!

Depends on the 50, I mean, I was less than 50lb overweight for a very long part of my adult life, but I was ALWAYS going to get fatter. I wasnt that temporarily overweight by 30lb because I've just had a baby kinda person, I always battled and struggled not to be fatter. I was always solid as a child, never obese, but I just have never been that effortlessly thin, healthy person.

When I was banded, I had a BMI of 36 and needed ot lose about 80 to get to the top of my healthy weight range. I was absolutely desperate about my weight and getting fatter by the year. It was time to do something drastic.

Because it is very important to consider that the band will help you to KEEP that weight OFF for the rest of your life. Its not about losing weight, its about losing it once, for good. The band will help you lose it, but it will also help you keep it off. so if you've got 50 to lose and you've always struggled with your weight, then having WLS is probably a valid and even sensible choice for you. I'f youve packed it on in the past year but never particularly had trouble with your weight, then that doesnt mean you shouldnt or cant do it, but you may be able to do this on your own. Statistically 50lb is about the upper limit that people really can lose weight and keep off by themselves.

You need to be prepared for the fact though that statistically also, the band doesnt tend to result in 100% of excess weight lost. I lost 120% of mine though and not with undue effort or superior dieting skills or anything like that. I just lost that much. You also need to be prepared that the band doesnt work miracles, its still about food choices, discipline, exercise, and that for someone as light as you, slow and steady weight loss rather than spectacular transformations. But its all so much more doable with a band.

Visible ports? Hell yeah, lol. Mine stuck out like a sort thumb because I got my BMI down to 19/20, about the size of a walnut under my very slim tummy - until it was moved a couple of weeks ago (and altered by my plastic surgeon) during a Tummy Tuck and now its very much less visible, hardly noticeable. You can get a low profile port and you can think seriously about placement - mine is now right next to my belly button, where you tend to have that natural shapely pocket of padding - before it was in the hollow part of my belly up and to the left of my belly button - outside the rectus muscle contour so it was extremely visible. You will also have a couple of scars, they're barely noticeable after a couple of years though.

But all in all, I was a "lighter" patient, although I had more than 50 to lose and I would do this again 1000 times over, its literally changed my life.

I am 5ft 4in and was 207.8 pre op now four weeks post op I'm 181. I was going through should I do it or not also but I decided to go with the surgery because even though I lost weight preop I knew I would put it back on because I have been through that many times. Now my recovery was not as easy as I thought it would be I was like wth did I do to myself for the first couple of weeks but now I feel so good. I am now am to hit the gym I even ran some today. Its your choice but like many say do your research because the band is just a tool and you need to learn how to use it. This band is not magic.

i was banded on 4/23. i also have 50 pounds to lose and after the struggles and hitting the gym twice a day with my trainer and various other methods i have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight i dont see it as "only" 50 pounds to lose. i do see this as a tool to finally help me get this weight off so it doesnt become 75, 100, 125 pounds to lose etc. I dont regret my decision and money is only money it comes and it goes. I have spent twice as much on dieting and other things to lose weight as this surgery cost me.

Ultimatly the choice is yours but it is an excellent tool. I was banded may 23 of this year and have gone from 217 to 188 so far. I am eating healthier for the most part but I'm not perfect and I like food but when I do eat something I shouldnt the qauntity is much less and this is without a fill. I have been on so many diets got to my goal weight and gained it all back which for me is exactly why I allow my self a cheat day for me I dont want it to be somthing I fail at. I'm still very new to the band so I dont know about the long term effects on the band but It does help with eating smaller portions. I actually wish I would have got it sooner. The hardest thing for me was the not drinking soda. My doctor actually say I can have diet soda if I pour it in a glass first and let the fizz die down a minute but I just cut it out completely cause Ive read on here most doctors say not to. I trust my doctor and deffinatly think he knows what hes talking about when it comes to the band being as he was one of the founders but I would rather not take any chances kinda speak. Honestly as far as surgery goes its diffrent gor everyone some go without any pain for me even though it was laproscopic it was the most painful surgery I had had but very quick recovery after about a week I was pretty much back to normal. In the beggining I was choking on Water so I actually thought the first day, what the heck did I do but that thought changed relitivly quickly. Like I said Im still very new to the band and at times I get frusterated with the pace of my weight loss but I do know its my fault the weight loss isnt quicker I only excerize two or three time a week and I dont eat perfect but I am still losing but very slowly. I didnt have a preop diet and I didnt have to see a nutristionist or get a bunch of test ran before my insurance approved me so the only thing I could say is if you go through with it do as much research as possible. I wish I knew and found this sight before I got banded so I could ask all the hundreds of questions I had. Sorry for the novel but I hope this helps

I got banded July 2 12. I'm 6' started at 280. I've lost a good 15 lbs since starting the pre op diet and now a week through. I also debated if I should go thru with it. Im 32 high Bp insulin dependent diabetic. I havent had to shoot insulin for 5 days now! I feel like I have a new lease on life. It's not easy. It hurts. But the pain is only temporary.

I'm 5 weeks post-op. My only complication is that I fart A LOT! The only person amused by this is my two year old son. Who joins my orchestra.

I would do it for 50 lbs... The point is that if you follow a few simple rules, you will keep it off. That is precious. Good luck to you!

I have 60 pounds to lose and i don't like when people tell me I'm crazy and that I'm not "that big." I know its not 100 + pounds to lose but it sure is still hard as hell to lose it. The struggle shouldn't be disregarded just because your not morbiddly obese. I've been trying to lose the weight for years and I just keep packing on the pounds. I'm sure there are a great deal of people whom wish they would have got the lap band before their weight gain hit the triple digits. I'm right with you and am planning to get the lap band next month. I am in a similar situation, I only have around 50 -60 lbs to lose. My problem being I can't keep the weight off, I've managed to lose 50lb before, and regained every lb, I need the extra little help to be able to maintain my health. I am paying for the op (to be carried out in October), and looked at all the pro's and cons, researched every detail and think this decision is worth every penny (dime) :-) after all I have paid out tonnes of money on every diet, pill, potion in the past. I am in no rush to lose the weight and my surgeon advised it will be hard and on average the weight loss for my stats are around 50lb in 12-18 months, which I am contented with. I have high blood pressure, arthritic knees, PCOS and Pre-diabetic, I see this as my final fling with tackling the fat, and am very optimistic that my health will improve.

What did you do to lose that much before surgery? Did your dr put you on a pre op diet or u did it on ur own?

Honestly speaking, I don't think that you have to worried about that. And there is no need to any surgery for weight loss. You should just concentrate to your diet and exercise. Make sure that you take low fat and carbs in your diet and drink green tea also. It's boost your metabolism and helps to burn extra body fat. In exercise i think you should do cycling and swimming for this purpose.

I was considered a low BMI when I got banded last year. I only wanted to lose around 50 lbs, give or take. Have I accomplished that? No, not yet. Am I the perfect lap band patient, nope not yet.

Would I do it again...that depends on the day. I am an emotional eater and when I eat for emotional reasons I want super large quantities of real food. Having the lap band took that away from me. So...if you are an emotional/quantity eater be prepared to have that taken away from you. On these days, I wish I was band free just so I could eat my stress/sad/angry feelings away.

Now, on the flip side, you can still ingest large quantities of "slider foods" - so that means all the chips, candy, and ice cream that I want. Have I gone down that path..unfortunately, I have. That would be why my weight has been creeping back up this spring.

As for portion control/restriction when eating "real food"...yes, I have it, and it works splendidly! However, getting used to the rules of eating as a lap band patient that is a whole different story. Sometimes I eat too fast...and ta-da I am running to the restroom to throw up gobs of slime and food. You would think that after almost a year and 1/2 I would have learned not to eat too fast by now.

I chose to get banded because I struggled my entire life with my weight. My metabolism is slowed from yo-yo dieting and my exercise is minimal because I work part-time and attend grad school full time (lots of time spent sitting in front of a computer). One of the good things that the band does is that because of where it is placed it sends messages to your brain that tell it that you are full. These are chemical responses, which is the reason a lap band patient can eat so few calories and lose weight without the body going into starvation mode. I know that if I were not banded and ate so little calories my body would slow my metabolism down even further.

Being banded is no cake walk, but for me it has been worth it.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
