Will the gas pain ever go away?

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days post op and the gas pains are still there. The worse ones are in my chest. The air travels from my stomach, up my esophagus and then stops. It doesn't result in a burp. The air just goes away. The pain only lasts for about 3-5 seconds, although it feels like 5 minutes. It happens several times an hour and anytime I stand up or sit up from a laying down position.

I also still get some occasional gas bubbles in my shoulder or neck. Ouch! These ones can hurt for hours. When these happen I take some of the Lortab and it helps within about 30 minutes.

I am out walking 2-4 hours every day. I heard lots of walking can help. I'm not able to jog or run yet because my port incision is still very tender. The impact of jogging makes my tummy bounce which causes me lots of pain.

I talked to the surgery center and to my doctor. They said the pain I was having is from the gas and will eventually go away. But when?

It seems like you will have the gas pain forever, but it will go away. Give it a few more days and just keep doing what you have been doing.

it will eventually go away. everyone is different. try a heating pad on your shoulders, that helped me. and i ate the mylanta chewables like every 4 hours. no drinking through a straw, makes the gas worse.

Thanks. I'll have to get some mylanta. I didn't know if anti-gas medicine would help since this is surgical gas. But, I'm willing to try anything.

The meds do help. I ended up with a liquid one - I think it was Maylox that I sipped all the time because those pains are so unbearable. The painful left shoulder, the chest pain and no burp. It all goes away though and is quickly forgotten once it goes.

Hang in there.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one with the chest pain w/o a burp. Although I had talked to the surgery center about this one, it is nice to hear from others that it is normal.

The first 5 days or so, I was doubled over with gas pain. I took the Gas-X strips. I have not a clue if they helped or not, but, I took them anyway. I am now out 12 days, and it is about 80% better. My doctor said that it will take at least 3 full months for it to vanish totally, but hey--80% better is still pretty good, in my book.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
