Confessions of a Bander Who Knows Better

Recommended Posts

Ok, I haven't been on here in FOREVER but I have lost my way and am needing some support and motivation. Here's my story...

My hubs and I were both banded in Jan of '09 and had been doing GREAT. By my one year mark I was down 110lbs and my hubs about the same. Shortly after my year mark I found out we were expecting our first (together) baby... we had been trying for 3 years so this was so exciting for us. At 9 weeks along I had a miscarriage and became incredibly depressed. I gained nearly 40lbs between my pregnancy and my miscarriage and have struggled with trying to lose the weight. I have lost about 20 of it, but still have 20 more to go. The hardest part is that I am the office manager for the surgeon who did my band. I'm supposed to be the example and here I am being the complete opposite. It truly hit me when a patient who hadn't seen me since I miscarried came in (not knowing that I had been pregnant or miscarried) and said, "ohhh did your lap band stop working?".... Trying to remember that some people have no class or sensor, but still it devastated me! I know what I need to do... I know what I'm doing wrong. I know my limits and I know how to get these 20lbs off! I still have great restriction, so I know I don't need a fill, I just need to do what I know is right.

So, here I am making a goal and putting it in writing. Starting now I will only put in my mouth foods that I know are good for me. I will count my calories and I will count my Protein intake. I will drink my Water. I will do some form of exercise every day.

I can do this, right?!

Yes, you most certainly CAN do this! I am so sorry about your miscarriage. You have set perfectly reasonable goals and you've put it in writing and shared it with us. And most of all, you have lost weight before, so I have no doubt you can do it again!

S/N: Why are some people so stupid?

Good luck!! I know it's hard, but you can get back on track, just try to disconnect food from your emotions. Remember it won't really make you feel better!

You can lose the weight, again. You have a great husband to support you, who has been through the weight loss and the other loss with you. You, also, have the support of your co-workers. I have noticed all the nurses at my surgeon's office have been banded, too. Go for it! Good luck. Karen

Just sending you some support from someone who has also been through miscarriage. Take care of yourself, and try to remember that food isn't going to make you feel better! Hugs to you!

You can do it! Give yourself a break (not from eating right or exercising) but on the guilt. Having a miscarriage is not easy to deal with. You can lose these last 20lbs...look at how far you have come already!!

I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

I think it's wonderful that you have your husband as a co-bander.

You sound like you are right back on track! You can absolutely lose those 20 pounds!! I also think it's great that you work in an office that does the procedure-that's helps keep you focus and honest. I always thought that weight watcher leaders had an edge because they were more on 'stage' with their weight lost.

Now that spring is here I am sure you can do more outdoorsy things and that will keep your mind occupied and your spirit renewed!

I can't believe that some people are so insensitive! Just think how much of a support you will be to someone who comes in and has gained -you now can say "Hey, that happened to me too-but I repriorized and refocused and you can do they same!" Good luck to you! ;)

I am sorry for your loss, you have had a rough time and now you have chosen to focus on getting healthy again. Please be kind to yourself...maybe ease into things instead of being so rigid all or nothing......cut back on Snacks and Desserts but do plan for them by increasing your exercise. You can do this, you have proven yourself and now is the time to get healthy and fit again. Congratulations to you and your hubby for the great weight loss overall!!!! You have come a long way.

Mimi

mrsebg, so you work in a bariatric office....I believe (of course I don't know you personally, so I could be wrong) that you are human like the rest of us here. You've had a hell of a tough time and perhaps may still be depressed over your unfortunate (I know understament of the year) situation that you have gone through. I am so sorry for your loss...and I can not even imagine what you have gone through...however, you are in a place that you can now start to identify where you need to get back in the game to continue on with your goal of a healthy life without the additional weight. You have noticed and decided to do something at the 40 lb mark, it could have been worse. Now you are back on track and I applaud you for your courage and perserverence. Too bad it took a rude and insensitive clod to wake you up, there really was no need for that person to say what she/he said to you.

I believe that you can do it! I know that you can do this for yourself and your health. Best of luck and don't be a stranger!

I think you have a unique opportunity to help other patients at your work. Do you attend a support group? Your story may be something that others have gone through. Everyone at one time or another has "life" happen to them. There are always rough times. We have to allow ourselves some flexibility during those times so we can process our emotions. It is perfectly OK and emotionally healthy to accept yourself during these rough spots without feelings of guilt or remorse. Love yourself for getting through this tough time. You will be in a much stonger position to pick up where you left off. Share your story with others when you can. You just may make a huge impact to someone's life. Lots of hugs to you!

You can definitely do this!! Suffering the loss you had is very difficult, you're bound to fall back on a few of the bad, comfort habits that you had. Fortunately, you have recognized this and are now ready to get back on track and do what you need to do to make yourself feel better. You didn't slide far at all and I'm sooo jealous of your tremendous loss to begin with. You won't have any problems, just do it!!!

By the way, the person who asked you that question, he or she is just an idiot. Sounds like you handled it well staying professional and thinking to yourself, what is wrong with this person!??!?

Good luck with everything, keep us posted!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
