2 months post-op and Bad Back Pain towards the end of the day

Recommended Posts

I was banded Feb. 28, 2011. So I am a little over 2 months post-op. I have little, if any restriction, and my weightloss is a little slower than what I had hoped it would be (I have lost 19 lbs since surgery). It seems like I lose most of my weight right after the fill---like 5-6 pounds, and then nothing the rest of the month :(.

I have been getting terrible back pain toward the end of the day, into the evening. It is pretty bad, and is concentrated in my middle back. It is pretty debilitating in the sense that I just want to try and stretch my back out and lay down. Which of course, being a mother to 2 young children isn't always an option.

I am getting extremely frustrated! I had this surgery so I would feel great and healthy :(. I am going to speak to my doctor about it and make sure it isn't anything serious, but has anyone experienced this? I just need some guidance. Any suggestions......???

Hello! I am 1 month shy of being a year post op. When i first got out of surgery, i had very little restriction as well. This surgery does not make the weight fall off by any means... and i had to learn that the hard way. I am like you, right after a fill i lose 5-6 lbs and then nothing else. I also get the back pain, but its mainly after i eat. I told my dr and he completely unfilled me... which i was totally upset over. I ended up gaining 5lbs. I finally got some restriction back (that whole ordeal lasted 4 months of not losing any weight). All in all, in one year i am down 50 lbs. I would have liked to been more, but those 4 months really set me back.

Do you have your back pain when your eating? I find when i am at work or on the go... i dont notice the back pain as much. I also am more conscious about how i am eating bc i dont want to get stuck in public. When i am at home, i tend to eat faster bc i am starving... and then i get stuck and afterwards my mid back KILLS me. I have to lay down.

I understand your frustrations, i have def been frustrated with the band, but i also have to see that 50 lbs is gone and not coming back! which is great. So Congrats on the 19 lbs, bc that is awesome. 20 lbs that isnt going to come back, gone forever! If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask or private message me.

Thank you so much for the reply. Now that you mention it, I think my back pain is related to eating to fast/too much. I have really tried to slow down and it seems to help. But I get SO starving and end up eating too fast. I have to work on that for sure. I'm a little leery about talking to my doctor about it cuz I would be so disappointed if he unfilled me tomorrow. I'm hoping to get another fill---not the other way around. I think I will try to make a conscious effort to slow down and limit my quantities more. If the pain persists, I will definitely talk to him tho.

Congrats on your weightloss

Congrats on your weightloss! 50 lbs is awesome! And you are right, 20 lbs is 20 lbs I'll never see again! We gotta stay positive :).

Thanks again for the info. It is so reassuring to know I'm not alone.

I was banded Oct. 2010 and my loss has b een extremely slow. But about your pain. There is a possibility that it could be gas. I have had episodes of very bad pain on my left side, so bad that if it was my right side I would have thought I had appendicitis. After having this happen several times I finally tried taking Gas-X when it occurred and it went away so I guess it was a huge gas pocket. Now as soon as I get a twinge I take the Gas X and feel better much faster. Just an idea. I do also get a pain in the middle of my upper back if I eat too fast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
