I just got the call!!!!!!!

I am so excited and scared and every other emotion that goes along with that :) So my question is....I can suppose to have surgery on May 24th however my husband and I have tickets for a baseball game that is about 5 hours away from where I live, so we will drive there and back and spend the weekend in the City. So I would have surgery on Tuesday and then leave for the game on Saturday morning....Do you think that is too much to do after having the lap band surgery????

Thanks so much!!

Good Luck to you. Everyone recovers from surgery differently. I just had it 5 weeks ago on Thursday and I feel great but it took about 7 efore I had the energy to do anything. I totally underestimated this surgery. I thought I would be up and moving around in hours. Just listen to your body and don't overdue it.

I want some clarification ---

You are having the surgery on May 24th and then making the 5 hour drive...on the same date?

I'm confused. So the surgery is local, then you'll drive 5 hours, stay a weekend in a different city and come back? How many days after surgery are you planning on leaving for this weekend away? Are you having surgery Tuesday and travelling Friday?

You can't drive while you're still on pain meds. 5 hours in the car might be painful if you're still dealing with gas pains, which you likely will be. I just don't think you'll have a very good time that weekend.

I would have surgery on Tuesday, May 24th and leave for the City on Saturday, May 27th and it would be a 5 hour drive one way. We would come back home on Monday, May 30th. Do you think that is too much to do after surgery??

Is your surgery the day of the game or is it the day before you are leaving?

I was banded on 3/1/2011 and my surgery was at 9am. After my surgery I was in recovery for a few hours then transfered to a room where I spent the day, slept, and was released the next day at 2pm. My surgery had no problems and everything went as planned. The total surgery time was about 45 minutes.

When released from the hospital I was put on hydrocodone, a pain medicine. While on the pain medicine you are unable to drive a vehicle. I dont want to be debbie downer but you will be in some pain for about 4-5 days even with the pain medicine. It will take about a week before you feel the pain subside and you will have some pain in your left abdomin where they put the port. After a month you wont even feel the pain from the port.

yes, sorry the surgery is local however my husband and another couple already have a weekend planned for a city 5 hours away. We would leave Sat. May 28th so 4 days after surgery.....I am thinking it might be a better idean to wait til the week after to have my surgery.

I think you're on the right track with that idea. Call and get your surgery moved until you get back. Another week of wait won't matter in the grand scheme of things!

Ya, I felt pretty good by day 5 but not good enough for a weekend trip. It is a bigger surgery than you think. I would see if you could reschedule your surgery until after. Good Luck!!!

It is all a state of mind! If you think you are ready and you are not too sore- DO IT! Get moving-get losing! It will make you feel better by being out! However, not eating ballpark food may make you sad a bit- but get some Water and roll with the punches!

If you have the option to put it off a week, I would. Everybody recovers differently, you don't want to do too much too soon. Personally, I probably could have done a road trip a few days out, but I tend to have a high pain tolerance and do well with anethesia. As others have mentioned, be sure not to drive while taking pain meds. Congrats on your impending surgery. Also, if you decide to have surgery, then go away for the weekend, bring a pillow to put inbetween your tummy and the seatbelt. I found the jostiling of the car a bit painfull.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
