Petrified of being nauseous and throwing up

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for next Monday, May 9th. I have come to the conclusion that what frightens me the most is being nauseous and throwing up, possibly even dislodging my band. I follow rules, but do you know other ways to insure I don't get nauseous ?? How much do you have to throw up before you have to woory you did something to your band ? Any info to help calm me would be so appreciated.

Just remember your doctor does not want you to throw up either. That being said, mine gave me a lot of anti-nauseous medicine in the hospital and then sent me home with a prescription. Tell them your fears and if you get sick easily let them know. They will do everything they can to keep you from throwing up.

Your Dr. will automatically give you a RX for nausea but you can also ask for a patch that they will put just behind your

ear, and will last for up to 3 days. I didn't have too many problems with that, except for when I get things stuck (I am still

learning what I can and can't eat that won't cause problems) but the patch works wonders! Just ask them about it when you

are getting set up and checked in at surgery and you should be fine! It's a nausea patch but I can't remember the exact name!

Good Luck!!

I believe it is called a scopolamine patch, I had one and did not get nauseas once post op. It did however mess with my eyesight so be careful with that. I didn't realize it was the patch at first

My question is really, when during this process does one feel nauseous and when and why will I throw up ?? If I listen to my doctors discharge orders will that guarantee I don't feel sick and throw up ? What are the major things I can do to make sure I don't get nauseous ? Aside from the meds, which I for sure will ask for, what else can I do.

I was in the hospital for 3 days after getting my Lapband, due to post operative nausea. This is the second time this has happened to me after a surgery. I once spent 5 days in the hospital, sick after gallbladder surgery.

I was fine after surgery for a few hours. Just long enough to leave the hospital and get settled in at my hotel room, that is. I did a LOT of dry heaving - for some reason, even though I would take some sips of Water, I could not actually throw up.

I only took one swig of my pain medicine before I had gotten sick, and stopped taking it after that, just in case it was the narcotic. I know that I have gotten sick from I.V. morphine and some other narcotic, after having c-sections. I also ripped off the anti-nausea thing from behind my ear, in case it was that, too, because it was once hypothesized that the anti-nausea stuff was actually making me sick when I had the gallbladder surgery. It also just so happened that once I stopped the anti-nausea stuff, I got better and went home.

My doctor told me that out of his 800+ surgeries, I was only the second person to get sick like that. He also ordered an upper GI and everything was still where it was supposed to be. I was still sick at the time, and did two more days of heaving afterward, but I think everything is fine still. I go in for my first fill on Tuesday, so I guess that's the time I'll find out .

I felt nausea when I woke up after surgery. They gave me some meds for that through my iv although I did still end up throwing up twice. Haven't be sick to my stomach since then.

The nausea after surgey is due to the anesthesia (the medicine that knocks you out!).

I was felt nausea for the 1st 24 hours after surgery.... a couple of good ones -- and I got scared - but my doctor said everything was fine.

Good Luck -

It sounds like you're under the impression that when people PB that there is nausea involved. On the contrary, whenever food comes up due to me eating too fast or too much, I don't feel naseous at all. The food just comes up ... and out. No feeling of sickness, it hasn't even been digested. My pouch is full and my esophagus does not allow the food to sit and wait until my pouch can handle more.

Many have nausea from the anesthetics after surgery. I wasted money buying the prescription my doc gave me because by the time I got home the next day I had zero nausea. I also only took Tylenol while in the hospital because morphine makes me sick.

Hang in there, you'll be just fine. As everyone said, tell the people at the hospital about your aversion to nausea and they'll fix you up.

Good luck.

I agree with everyone else. Tell them you want the patch and that'll work wonders. My lapband was my fourth surgery within 3 years. The first time I had surgery I was soooooooooo nauseous and vomiting horribly afterwards. Every surgery after that I stressed that I get extremely nauseous. Each time they've hooked me up with the patch and a couple shots in my IV. Right as rain. No nausea whatsoever.

Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
