I'm 54 and have a hypo-thyroid. The band has given me hope to finally loss weight!!! And..... it seems to be working!!! I'm walking 3 -4 times a week; eat 800 - 1200 calories per day. I'm feeling great... but still have a long way to goo. Never tooo old to get healthy and fit. I was banded in December . I found that I wasn't losing for almost a month and finally got my first fill yesterday. (for some reason, my insurance is pretty strict about the timing of fills in order to get it covered) My Doc tells me that I've only just begun by journey and that once I hit the "sweet" spot with the perfect amount of fill, I'll surely be successful!

Hi, I've been seeing a lot of people with a lot of success on this site, and that's really encouraging, but I was wondering specifically if there are folks out there who were banded when they were 50 or older, and what their experience was like. My surgery date is May 11th, and along with being nervous about all the eating adjustments and possible problems, I'm also concerned about how my age (slower metabolism and all that) will affect my experience and my chances for success. Any "older folks" ;) out there willing to share?

Hello there, I'm 68 and was banded on the 28th of Feb.2011 I have lost a total of 48 lbs. and I don't feel like my age has been an issue at all.

I had no pain what so ever with the surgery other than gas pain and that left after about a week. I already have so much more energy and feel so much better than I have in years. I have had one fill and have another appt. for a check up on the 25th of May. Don't worry about your age just listen to your surgeon and you should do great. Good luck and Best wishes on your new life.

I was banded when I was 53 and coming up on 2 years soon. I am a slow loser. When I started out I didn't exercise much ... back surgery in 2004 and spinal stenosis currently. I now walk 2.5 miles every morning before work and 3 miles on Saturday mornings. I look like a different person! Best thing I EVER did for myself. Slow loser or not, I don't regret getting the lap band for on second! I am healthier than I have been in 30 years.

I wish I had done this at 50 ... or even younger.

Good luck to you!

~Fran

Hi all -- Thank you all so much for replying and your encouraging words! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner --- I have been having several rounds of dental surgery on top of getting ready for wt loss surgery, and just did not make it back to the computer. But it was WONDERFUL to hear from you all, and to hear about your successes. I pray that I, too will succeed, and be able to start a new, healthy life. Thank you all again!

Like the others it is never too late! I was banded last year (Aug. 2010) at the age of 52. I have been lucky, no problems and still have yet to have a fill. I exercise and continue to work on changing my eating behavior, however, I am off the blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medication and the only things that I now take are multivitimans and supplements. My joints are dancing with joy, up until last year, I was limping and was lucky if I could walk around the block without getting winded and experiencing ankle, knee and hip pain! Today, even when the weather is cold, I feel no pain and now climb 9 flights of stairs without pain, and have only a slight amount of breathlessness. I wish you success!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
