livingmydream 6 Posted April 29, 2011 Does anyone know if you are required to do the preop liquid even if you lose weight prior to getting banded? My doctor's office said that most people lose a minimum of ten pounds prior to surgery on the liquid diet. Has anyone out there lost weight on their own and not had to do the liquid diet pre-surgery? I was just curious.
reverie 49 Posted April 29, 2011 The purpose of the pre-op diet isn't to lose weight unless your doctor has told you specifically that you need to lose weight to get surgery. Otherwise the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver and lower the triglyceride levels in your body. Weight loss generally occurs because of glycogen depletion and such low caloric levels. Liza<3 1 Posted April 29, 2011 Yes, the pre opt diet is to shrink the liver not really to lose weight.. I have lost 8lbs so far and get banded on may 3rd... Might need to get with your doctor and check if ur needing to lose wieght before surgery or its to shrink your liver...
pinktulips 1 Posted April 29, 2011 I was told it is to help shrink your liver prior to surgery & makes the procedure easier for the doctor. I just figured that's part of the process & I'm a rule follower (haha) so I didn't question it. I was on full liquids 2 weeks pre-op but I see plenty of people who say they ate food up until the day before...everyone has a different experience.

joleng5 9 Posted April 29, 2011 For some reason my dr. does not require you to preop diet but was wondering if i should anyway, it seems like almost everyone on here talks about their preop diet. Everyone will probably think im crazy for saying that, but if it will help the surgery go better and make things easier for the dr. i would do it. I am a mother of 4 2 of them being very young and have never had surgery and am very nervous but know i need to do this.
