Pre-Op Diet...Is there Another Way???

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you are required to do the preop liquid even if you lose weight prior to getting banded? My doctor's office said that most people lose a minimum of ten pounds prior to surgery on the liquid diet. Has anyone out there lost weight on their own and not had to do the liquid diet pre-surgery? I was just curious.

The purpose of the pre-op diet isn't to lose weight unless your doctor has told you specifically that you need to lose weight to get surgery. Otherwise the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver and lower the triglyceride levels in your body. Weight loss generally occurs because of glycogen depletion and such low caloric levels.

Yes, the pre opt diet is to shrink the liver not really to lose weight.. I have lost 8lbs so far and get banded on may 3rd... Might need to get with your doctor and check if ur needing to lose wieght before surgery or its to shrink your liver...

I was told it is to help shrink your liver prior to surgery & makes the procedure easier for the doctor. I just figured that's part of the process & I'm a rule follower (haha) so I didn't question it. I was on full liquids 2 weeks pre-op but I see plenty of people who say they ate food up until the day before...everyone has a different experience. :)

Interesting...thank you so much for the insight. I didn't realize that.

For some reason my dr. does not require you to preop diet but was wondering if i should anyway, it seems like almost everyone on here talks about their preop diet. Everyone will probably think im crazy for saying that, but if it will help the surgery go better and make things easier for the dr. i would do it. I am a mother of 4 2 of them being very young and have never had surgery and am very nervous but know i need to do this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
