Really struggling with this post-op diet!

Recommended Posts

I just need to vent here a little, sorry....

I am really really struggling with this post-op liquid diet! I did a week and 1/2 of the liquid diet before the surgery, and now I am 4 days post-op and I don't know how I am supposed to make it another week and 1/2. I am on full liquids which means that I can have cream Soup and yogurt, ect. but I am still hungry! I can actually eat an entire can of Soup and not feel full! Is that strange? The fact that I can eat like normal and not feel full really freaks me out. Most people have said that they feel full after just a little bit, but not me! I am so tired of the protien shakes and soup that I cant stand it anymore. I even ate a bowl of vegetarian chili today which I didn't even puree first. I ate the whole can of it and then was still hungry! I even tried some leftover crab dip that was almost like liquid when i heated it up, but I know that it's not what I should be eating right now. I am going to try to go back to only cream Soups and protien shakes tomorrow, but I just needed to talk about what a hard time I was having. My boyfriend says it's all mind over matter, and not to think about being hungry. Well after he said that to me last night, I had a major meltdown and started crying about how hard it is not to be able to eat solid food. I am ashamed that I am not being stronger about this. I thought I was ready to do this, ready to loose this weight. I almost wish that I was sick or nauesated so that I wouldn't want to eat. Not to mention that my period started and boy does that make me even more emotional and hungry! I am sorry to boo hoo on here about this, but it's my only outlet for people who may understand what I am going through right now. These last four days have been very hard and I can't wait to get past this point!

Also, can anyone tell me how much I should be eating anyway? I think I need to start measuring the soup before I put the entire can into the pot. I haven't a clue about what the max is. Any help would be great with this. Thanks all!

liquids go right through the band into your lower stomach so you most likely will not get a "full" feeling from liquids. It is really hard, and emotional, you're doing great. I got to go to mushies after 3 days. Different Dr.'s have different rules. If you are really really hungry, call your dr and tell them. They may tell you to add mushies to your diet. Good luck to you!

You just gotta control yourself.. it'll always be like that. Eventually.. after fills and stuff you will get fuller on less food. But you HAVE to remember, not as important at this stage, but you have to control what goes in, and the calories... don't test it.

Maybe call your doctor and see if you can go to mushies yet. But just hang in there! It's only a week out of your whole life!!

Awww, most of us were feeling precisely like you when we were 4 days out. And when your period hits, it's like there is no end to the hunger at all! I know it's hard, and each day feels like forever, but in a couple of weeks, when you're eating fuller foods and not feeling hungry, you're going to be super happy with the results! And don't beat yourself up for being hungry, it's totally normal. And most of us cheated on the post-op diet a little. The key is to keep doing it, even if you feel like you've messed up. It's sooo important to stick with the post-op diet, because you're body is healing. Introducing thicker foods that could end up getting stuck, and then you'll end up throwing up when your band is still healing into place, and that's not good. But you can do it! Vent all you need to, we're here to listen and try to give encouraging feedback.

I am sorry you are having a tough time. I am banded 8 days and stuggling a bit too. Remember to keep your Protein up so your body can heal!! Maybe try a Protein Drink with some fruit mixed in if your DR will give the OK.

Good luck!

I feel the exact same way I'm still on full liquids and wanna eat my arm off. I called the dr and explained to him the situation and told me to try some cottage cheese which I did and still not making me full. So I go in next Thursday to see him hopefully I'll be able to go into full mushies cause this is nuts. I feel your pain.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful support and comments! I finally got out of the house today and bought some new creamy Soups and stuff to try to mix it up a bit. I am deternined not to let this liquid diet get the best of me anymore. I can't deny that it feels like an eternity till I can have regular food again, like the days are going by so slowly, but that's just the way it is right now. I really appreciate this website and forum because I would be lost without it! It really helps me get through the days!

I was banded 3/25/11 and I know exactly how you feel... as I am back on liquids after my first fill the other day. Here's the painful reality check, you go two horrible weeks on liquids, then two slightly better weeks on mushies (which for me was harder as mushies tend to be carb or calorie heavy) then I had 4 glorious days of eating solids then BAM back to liquids and mushies until Saturday. I think the liquids and mushies are a nature of this beast. I find it so much easier to just grab a shake for a meal than have to think about chew, chew, chew! Good luck!! Stay strong, we've all been there.

Try spacing out your food. My doctor allowed smooth Soup (ie tomato) and Protein shakes during full liquids. I would have 8 oz soup (measure it) and then an hour later have the Protein shake. This will at least mean you are eating every couple hours.

Not toe be a downer but I did not get restriction until 6 months. Also in general if you are full on a "few bites" your band is too tight. My doctor says 3oz solid Protein and then some veggies. That is more than a few bites.

4-28-2011

I was banded 4-25-2011 and I am back on full liquids after 3 days of Clear Liquids. I sometimes mix my leftover brewed coffee with a scoop of the vanilla powder. I blend it with a few ice cubes. I drink it slowly making it last at least 15 minutes. I've also put 1 TBS of low fat Peanut Butter in with the chocolate powder and almond milk. Mixing the powder in yougurt and leaving in the freezer for about 20 minutes yields ice cream to me. Adding 1/8 tsp Crystal lite lemonade to lemon yogurt=lemon meringue pie for me. You have to use your imagination and stay busy doing other things.

I don't have any good tips because I was on liquids for two weeks after surgery and just recently moved to the mushy stage... it's just hard if you're not feeling any satiety. Are you making Protein shakes with Water or milk? I noticed making mine with milk made them stick with me a lot longer.

Are you EVER feeling full or satisfied?

I was banded yesterday and from last night until today, I have only consumed about 10 calories from chicken broth and Jello. I'm still healing so I know I won't be able to eat much, but I'm dedicated to playing by the book simply because I want maximum weight loss. I feel restriction already (weird enough) and have the realize band. Don't know if that makes any difference...

I'm on the full liquids too and dream of the musy stage which is still 10 days away. I do think getting out of the house is key. I went to a movie and drank a Vitamin Water.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
