Greetings all. I am a 65 year old woman living in Mesa, Arizona who is in the second month of a three month preoperative period. Medicare will not cover the sleeve and because I have a short torso creating a "belt line" I am not a candidate for lap RNY. Age and scar tissue make an open RNY out of the question. Guess I am saying that I come to the Realize Lap Band by default, not by choice since I need to lose around 100 pounds.

I am looking forward to learning from all of you!

I am 58 and live in Kingman Arizona. I am to goal with the lap band and have gained 5-6 pds back and forth since last Christmas. No matter what I do I cannot get the weight off and stay off. I was initially approved for gastric in NY before we moved here 7 yrs ago but did not want that drastic surgery. I waited until we moved here and was denied 2 times before they finally approved me for lap band on 12/20/08. I am glad I have the band, it is not as drastic and I have somewhat been very content with the results. I have a niece and nephew that had the gastric and they are both gaining their weight back much faster than I could imagine possible. All of these surgeries can be eaten "around" and it is always going to be a work in progress. I think you will be happy in the long run with this surgery and my Dr suggests the allergan versus the realize for older heavier people. I don't know why but I can honestly say that I look and feel great and i owe it to the office of Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas. I do not have any fill and never did, so this has been my choice in how to deal with this band and it has worked very well for me. I have learned that it can be done many ways, it just depends on how you and your body want to handle this journey.

Hi, I'm just down the road from you (near Newberry Springs, CA). I'm a little older than you and also getting the band. From what I've read, the Lapband is just as effective

as the sleeve over a year's period. I also have about 100lbs to loose and have no doubts that I will. I go next Monday and I'll let you know how it goes.

Best of luck and keep in touch.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
