Lady Lexie 4 Posted April 23, 2011 Hi everyone I was banded on the 19th and just recently started experiencing some issues. I warn you that this is a little gross but I hadn't had a bowel movement until yesterday. Unfortunately it was diarrhea and it happened about five times. I called my surgeon this morning to ask him what he thought was wrong and what I should do. He said that my body may be having problems adjusting to the hight Protein diet. He didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with the Protein Shake I have been drinking. He told me to stop drinking the shake and start drinking milk instead. This concerns me a lot. I mean obviously I don't want the diarrhea any more as it is awful and dehydrating, but is milk enough to sustain my body for the 3 week liquid period? Has this ever happened to anyone else? Jenn1214 120 Posted April 23, 2011 I had the same problem where I wouldn't have a BM for days and then it would be very soft. I wasn't worried because I wasn't eating solid food so I didn't expect to have a solid BM. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids so you don't dehydrate in case the diarrhea continues. Feel better!
vickyd 24 Posted April 23, 2011 I had diarrhea after surgery for the entire 2 weeks that I was on liquids. My NUT had me switch to a lactose free shake with soy milk (I was slightly lactose intolerant before surgery and more so after surgery which is known to happen for some people). This helped a bit but it didn't entirely go away until I started on mushies. Personally, I wouldn't think that milk is enough to sustain you for a few weeks but im not your doctor...definaty make sure to stay hydrated...
Princess_Gottalose 1 Posted April 23, 2011 I drank milk almost the whole time with little Protein and was fine..> I am 10 months out and doing great!!!
Sistersue 12 Posted April 23, 2011 Remember liquid in, liquid out. About 1/2 the people are constipated, the other 1/2 have diarrhea. It will go away with mushies. Imodium works good. I can't use the whey Protein stuff it has to be soy or hemp or something. It gets better.
thsisme 14 Posted April 23, 2011 As princess said, I would add protien to your milk or soy milk as the case might be. You might want to try another brand of Protein. vanilla I find can be a good flavor to add to your milk/non milk product to help keep your protein needs up. Immodium, or you might want to try adding some Fiber to your drink. Remember the fiber may take a bit to cut in. No topic ....ok well let me modify that almost no topic is to gross for this forum at one time or another there are always a few of us who have experienced one thing or the other and it always helps to know that you are not alone out there in bandster land! Rachel412 116 Posted April 23, 2011 If you're on an all liquid diet, it just makes sense that what comes out of you is going to be pretty much liquid too, doesn't it? My wls practice warned of very loose stools for a couple of weeks after surgery since I'm taking in so many liquids, and they were right on. I wouldn't be concerned unless your Protein drink is causing other problems.
kellyanne 1 Posted April 23, 2011 I was banded yesterday and have diarrhea. I hoping the cream of wheat on Monday will stop that. I am drinking as much liquid as I can tolerate and hopefully that will keep me dydrated. Good Luck! Kelly Hi everyone I was banded on the 19th and just recently started experiencing some issues. 54Shirley 105 Posted April 23, 2011 If you ave a blender. I would try some Protein, milk or Water, add a banana, and some Peanut Butter just until it's not a thin shake, more like thin - medium. If its all blended well,"and not chunky!" That might help firm it up. Otherwise you have to deal with water in/water out.
fefebutterfly 7 Posted April 23, 2011 Lexie. I understand where you are coming from. I find it odd that you are already drinking full liquids or maybe there are different diets for different doctors. This is the following diet my doctor gave me to follow: Week one: Clear Liquids-broth,Jello,Water, clear juice, Isopure week two: Full liquids-Protein drinks, tomato Soup, v-8, strained cream Soups week three: pureed foods week four: pureed foods and mushies week five: all above and start to incorporate other foods week six: Regular diet as tolerated I hope this will Help and good luck to you on your WLS Journey: FeFe
Lady Lexie 4 Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks everyone for your responses. It's comforting to know I'm not alone as I enter this exciting yet confusing chapter in my life. This morning tried to switch back to the clear Isopure to see if this would make a difference. By noon I had 2 episodes of diarrhea again. So i finally took an imodium and I have been drinking milk with a little bit of soy Protein Powder mixed in. So far so good.
