what's with the hernias?

Recommended Posts

I see where a lot of people had hernias repair when they got banded. Did you know about the hernia before you went in for surgery, or was it only discovered after then started the surgery? Is there and exta cost to repair it. I have my pre-op testing on May 6th and was wondering when do you find out a hernia needs repairing?

My surgeon thought I maybe had one because I had reflux so bad before surgery. But he said he wouldnt know until he went in during surgery and if I had one he would fix it and put on the band. Turned out I didn't have one. :)

I had an upper GI done to rule out a hiatal hernia before my surgery. I thought for sure I had one because I had heartburn every day and ate Tums like candy!

My hernia was discovered during the surgery. Yes there will be an extra charge. My DR is going to file it with my insurance and then I will have to pay what the insurance does not.

I knew I had one before I went in... I was hoping he wouldn't see it, but he did. It was the size of a fist,

He took a hot rod and seared it, which closed it completely. He also removed my Lymph Nodes in the Groin (I MEAN OUCH !)

that he thought were cancerous. They were not. He billed my ins. co., and they paid for everything.

I did'nt know I had one but it makes sense considering the acid reflux I had even though 8 months before surgery I was eating low fat (no fried foods), low cal diet, small portions.

I know now, before surgery, that I have one. It was discovered a few years ago when I had an upper GI xray due to bad acid reflux and them worrying I had an ulcer or other problem... so they were doing checks for hernias and ulcers and such stomach issues.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
