Anti-Depressants with the Lap-Band

Recommended Posts

So, I was diagnosed with depression a couple of months ago and was prescribed with Lexapro. I understand that Lexapro may increase weight. I have the medication but I'm not taking it the way i'm suposed to because i'm scared I'll gain weight. My question is if any one has taken Lexapro or any other anti-depressants and what were the pros and cons?

Thank you in advance,

Claudia

Claudia,

I have been taking Celexa (Lexapro's mother---it is the same chemical formula but cheaper for me since my insurance won't cover Lexapro) for over 11 years. I had a bout with depression/anxiety in college and have went off the medicine a few times but always came back. I am still on my medication. I am not as anxious, can concentrate, don't spend days in bed and am not overeating.

My advice would be to find a time to take your medication when it will work best--morning or evening. I take mine medicine at night. Lexapro is a mild antidepressant. It may make you sleepy. You may feel better and want to do more-and not gain any weight. I don't know. Body chemistry varies so much. In any case, I would find a good therapist and doctor to work wth you.

Hugs!

I was on Lexapro for three months and gained weight. I have since switched to prozac, and lost that extra weight, along with 10 more pounds. Everybodys reaction to medicine is different, and you have to find the best one for you. Sometimes it is just trial and error. Hope everything works out. Be Blessed!!!

I take zoloft. I'm at higher risk for gaining weight DUE TO DEPRESSION, or failing with the band, if I do not take it. My psyhologist asked me to stay on it thru my WL journey as well (which I fully agreed to...was glad to agree...)

Claudia,

I have been on a variety of antidepresants for several years, and regardless of the sideeffects of possible weight gain-you need to acknowledge the benefits. I may have gained some weight over the several years but I really think the benefits of the medication definately outweigh the few pounds. Best of luck on your journey, remember you and your health are the most important.

I take zoloft also, and I can usually tell the difference when I don't take it. The anti-depressant medication should help a great deal sice it will balance the chemicals in your brain. Your seratonim liquid is the "happy" antidote and that should help with your weight loss.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
