Anti-Depressants with the Lap-Band

Recommended Posts

So, I was diagnosed with depression a couple of months ago and was prescribed with Lexapro. I understand that Lexapro may increase weight. I have the medication but I'm not taking it the way i'm suposed to because i'm scared I'll gain weight. My question is if any one has taken Lexapro or any other anti-depressants and what were the pros and cons?

Thank you in advance,

Claudia

i took lexapro years ago-and hated it! i have been on zoloft for 2 years now and it is great-BUT i am on it for anxiety so don't know if that would make a difference if you are needing it for depression?

I take Effexor with 0 problem. I asked my doc if the med would possibly hinder my weight loss and he said no, many of his patients are or were on anti-depressents.

Actually both Prozac and Wellbutrin will help with food cravings and also with weight loss.

Hey, I have tons of wellbutrin in my stash. Does it really help with those cravings? My hardest time is at night when I want to snack so bad but if Wellbutrin is that good I might give it a try!

Yes they sure do. The Wellbutrin also gives me tons of energy.

I'm on it for depression BUT it has given me energy, curbed my appetite and helped with my cravings. It is actually known to cause weight loss in most people.

I love it and the pills I got are very small.

I actually have a prescription for it I just never took it.

Do you recommend taking it in the a.m. or p.m., if I want to have the appetite curbing effects at it's best after dinner time......or does it just last the same for the whole 24 hours?

I take prozac for anxiety and can really tell the difference in my energy level when I miss a pill. I have lost 21 lbs in 2 1/2 months plus 2 sizes!

I took Lexapro for 2 years. One of those years was when I was first banded. It helped a lot but after 2 years I switched back to Zoloft as it seems to work better for me. It (lexapro) did not cause any weight gain. But the Zoloft at a high dose causes really bad carb cravings. The only antidepressant I have been on that made me gain weight was Paxil I put on 40 lbs with it.

Thank you for the great advice ladies. I have been taking Lexapro for 4 months on an off and I've gained approximately 12 lbs. Which is even more depressing. Also, it makes me super tired and all I want to do is sleep. I will consult with my dr. to see about a switch.

Thank you once again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
