Banded yesterday 4/21/11

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I was banded yesterday with no complications. I slept like crap last night bc I am a side/tummy sleeper and sleeping on my back is really uncomfortable. Today I'm sore but no worse than web I had my c-section in may 09. I know I need to be up walking the block, but I'm pretty sore. How is everyone else doing?

Hi Deidre, I also got banded yesterday! I am also exactly the same way, im a side sleeper and that certainly wasnt happening last night. I have been able to get rid of most my gas but my port area is VERRY sore. Also the middle of my stomach was more sore than I expected, which I am now finding out is because they repaired a major hiatle hernia I had.

Overall though I feel pretty good. I have been out walking around today and trying to stay as active as I can. Havent felt hungry yet, but ive read dehydration horror stories so I am trying to keep myself as hydrated as possible!

Congrats to us!

Seriously, I'm not hungry either! I tried to drink a Protein shake, but just am not feeling it. I'm having DH bring home some chicken Soup from Quiznos to strain. Maybe that will help with the dehydration issue. I can't believe I'm not hungry. It's so odd! Especially after the Clear liquids only day of Wednesday. That was a freaking nightmare. COngrats to you, too. We are on our way to a whole new life! How much do you want to lose?

For me, to have a normal BMI, I need to lose 114 from my pre-op visit. That would put me at 169. Honestly, anthing under 190 and I think I'd be so happy. I'm planning to go buy a pair of jeans from GAP in the largest size they have and hang them up on my wall. That's goal #1!

Hope you have a great day!

Congrats to both of you! You'll be sore for a while, but yes, MAKE SURE you're getting your fluids in even if you're not hungry. If you end up dehydrated you'll feel 10 times worse!

My appetite came back 6 days after surgery- FYI!

Yes! Congratulations! I am a few days into mushies and can't complain. Started exercising too. Am a bit bummed as I am so out of shape that walking 3 miles on the road made my back sore! EEEK! Fluids are the key - keep sipping away and you'll be fine! Good luck!

Hi,

I was also banded on the 21st! Surgery went well and I had a hernia repair. My first night in the hospital was a little rough and my port site hurt more than I expected. I went home yesterday and I'm feeling ok. Still very, VERY sore on the left side, though. When you all stand up, do you feel like your stomach is really tight and sore?

I'm not hungry at all right now and have to force myself to have enough Protein. It's tough to get all that liquid in! In the hosptial I had an Opti Source shake and it was GOOD! I'm going to order some of those to mix it up a bit. Right now I'm using EAS and Oh Yeah shakes, which are okay, but it will be nice to get a little variety. I wish I liked the clear Protein drinks, but I don't. I'm going to get a few new ones to try and then cut them with Water. Hopefully that will help!

When I was weighed right before going into surgery, I had lost 14 pounds on my pre-op diet. Woo hoo! :D I have about 100 more to go.....

My start weight was 319 and goal for me is 215 for (im 6'4") . I have been VERY Sore on my left port side as well as feeling very tight. Most of the pain is my fault however. The doctor stressed how important walking around was in the first couple days, in order to avoid blood clotting. I actually had a family friend die because of a blood clot following surgery and made darn sure i wouldnt be the same. So I ran normal errands yesterday (less then 24 hours post surgery) BIG mistake. I started to feel ill. extremely weak, and in a lot of pain. Even after I got home and laid down it still didnt go away. Went to see the doc for my 48 hour follow up appointment today. He said everything looks good and that I could move onto full liquids. He also gave me some higher pain meds (Norco 10/345) which have COMPLETLY taken the pain away, and pretty much all other feeling other than the feeling of being high off my @ss lol.

I am soo looking forward to taking a shower tonight too.

Hope everyone else is doing well <3

My fellow April 21st bandsters - do you have one incision that's much bigger than the others? I have one that is about 2.5 or 3 times larger than the others. I'm assuming it's near or at my port site. And it still hurts like crazy, especially when I stand up! Anyone experiencing this? Everything else feels fine, but that one is giving me lots of trouble. I was hoping to go back to work tomorrow, but looks like I'll be "working" from home instead...

Thanks,

Angela

I woke up today on day 4 with a huge pain in my left side. During the night my body must have said the heck with this laying on my back and I woke up on my left side. If I am sitting or laying down it's fine but when I walk a round is when it really hurts. I go in for my one week check on Tuesday I will see if this is normal.

Yes, that's the incision they use to put the band and tubing and port in. Tends to be painful for the longest. I wish you good healing!

I went to see my doctor today b/c my port site has been bothering me so much and he said it "might" be infected. :( I'm now on antibiotics for 7 days and need to go back in a few days to see how it's doing. It was very bruised after surgery, so he isn't sure if it's the redness that comes after brusing or an infection. I'm SO bummed out. It does hurt a lot still. Just thinking good thoughts that antibiotics resolve the issue. It's been red since the hospital and I told the nurse and the fellow who saw me afterwards about it, but they weren't concerned. Grumble. Just hoping this goes away!!!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
