emotional rollercoaster

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery on 4/15 and the last 3 or 4 days I have been REALLY emotional. I have a lot going on with my family and my marriage stress wise. I have always been a detached person when it comes to showing my emotions to most people and I have some pretty thick skin so not much gets to me but these past few days I have been crying at the drop of a hat. I feel like I don't have any control over what is happening around me when usually I'm at the top of my game.

Has anyone else felt an emotional change like this shortly after surgery? What did you do to change it? Did you end up getting a grip on yourself again?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

~Pam

I too went through the emotional woes. Be patient with yourself. You will soon feel like you are in control again. It is a process of relearning the food process. Often times I think we start to grieve the loss of our food addiction. Our heads are still addicted but our body no longer allows us to induldge. It does get better.

I also delt with this emotion, about week 2-3 after my surgery, I was miserable, felt so sorry for myself, but as time went by I got used to the amount of food I could eat, and now I am very happy with everything. Hang in there it will get better. :)

I was pretty depressed after surgery too. I cried when I had to watch my fiance eat in front of me and all I could have were those frickin Protein shakes! Once I got past liquids I was fine again.

I think many many people who have WLS go through the emotional roller coaster! Your body has been through "trauma"! Surgery! We can't eat our emotions away anymore! So I think that has alot to do with it too for though of us who eat out of our emotions!

I was a train wreck! I cried every waking moment! No-one understood why I was crying! Half time I didn't even know why I was crying! I was still crying up til a few weeks ago... My new Prozac is finally working! LOL... I needed something to really help me through the tough times!

Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
