When did you start to feel better?

Recommended Posts

Hi Rachel,

I was banded Tuesday April 12th. My problem was that I did not initially turn to the prescribed pain medicine and boy did I pay.I do not like taking medicine period. Once I took my first dose, I was in heaven. Ikept up with half doses every 5.5 hours and that was all I needed. It is now Saturday and I took a half dose this morning. I will take a half dose of what was prescribed tonight before turning in.

Because my barium swallow was slow going down and I had swelling, I was told to stay on a clear liquid diet until today. I called my doctor's office yesterday to make sure I was okay with the tightness that I was feeling, they said yes. I confessed that I was not doing my Proteins yet and they told me that I should be getting some in so that I could heal and have some strength. I then forced down the sample powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth. I am still having problem with the CIB and Protein powder. What is crazy is that I was able to get my cream of wheat down this morning and my 98%fat free cream of chicken Soup down this evening. I am actually going to try the Protein Powder in my food instead of with the CIB tomorrow. I can't quite explain why I was able to get the Cereal and Soup down over the carnation instant Breakfast. The warmth of the soup and Cereal was soothing though. Now that I think of it, when I take in iced down juice or CIB I feel pain in the center of my chest as if something is stuck...better description-it feels like a darn knot.

Honestly this is the first day that I have felt like I could move and my spirits were up. Do not overdue it, but I do agree with others that said not to give in to the pain too much. What I mean is take care of yourself, but my first step to taking control was taking in a short stroll Friday midday. Today I hung out with my two children for awhile and pushed forward. It was not me that did it it had to have been God, because I was making myself miserable the first couple of days aside from the expected discomfort. Finally, I am learning that everyone is different.

I'm still feeling weak, and sore. I've heard most people only take the rX painkillers for a couple of days after surgery, but I'm still taking them because my incisions hurt. When my surgeon went in to place the band, he found (and fixed) a hiaital hernia-- is this why I'm still having a lot of pain? I know that being on liquids will keep me feeling weak for a while, but I was hoping to feel a little more human by now than I do ;) Also I ended up with a rash all over my torso that my doctor thinks is an allergic reaction to something used in the surgery, so he told me to take Benadryl-- let me tell you, Benadryl and Percoset KNOCKS YOU FLAT!

Also, I burp after every. single. swallow. Every one, doesn't matter how big or small the swallow was! Is this going to go away?

I had my surgery on April 12th.. The first 2 days i hurt but mostly from the gas. i think i took 4-5 pain pills ans 2 pills for nausea,i got sick from riding in the car home..NO overnight stays. My advise is to get outta bed and start walking. even if its in the house,it help with the gas pains. Its now the 16th,Ive been out shopping and doing my same ole every day routine, except for the lifting. I have my post-op visit on the 20th and hopefully i can have soft food then. If i see another Protein Shake after this liquid diet is over im gonna SCREAM!!!! lol. Best wishes to all of you. Lynne

Thank you so much for your post you really helped me! The shortness of breath has been freaking me out..but hearing you say the things you did makes me feel better..bless you!

I was banded two months ago and had the same thing, the rash, the hernia repair, and the burping after each swallow. Don't worry, in 5 more days max you'll start feeling a ton better. The hernia repair is what causes the extra pain and uneasiness. I felt like I couldn't catch my breath for a full week after because it hurt to breath in too deeply. But each day gets better, you'll get more energy when you get off the pain meds. Like I said, give it another 5 days, and you'll feel better I'm sure. You'll be sore and move slightly slower for a month post-op. Truth be told, about a month ago I started getting super energy and I haven't felt this good in probably close to 3 or 4 years! I hope your recovery gets smoother as you go... I'm sure it will. Hang in there and congrats on your surgery!

Thank you so much everyone!! I've realized that first thing in the morning is the most painful for me- I haven't been taking meds in the middle of the night so when I wake up I may have laid on my incisions, and man, it HURTS to get out of bed and down to where the drugs are biggrin.gif

I'm having 15 people over today who don't know about the surgery (well, I finally told them I had surgery, but not what kind) so it'll be interesting to watch them all eat junk food and pizza while I sip my broth ;)

Saundra- it does seem that a lot of people have a hard time getting down cold things, but it's much easier to swallow warm/hot things. Seems like that's the case for you too!

My 6 year old told me yesterday that I look smaller. I thought that was really sweet, considering there's no way I do- she must have said it to be nice, and it WAS nice.

I felt like crap the first day, the second day was a lot better and the third was almost normal. Only took the pain mess first two days when I was uncomfortable (not every 4 hours). Of course getting up fir the next few days I was sore but not sore enough for drugs.

I hope that all goes well today. I woke up this morning and the tightness where my surgeon repaired my hernia is not there. My husband took the kids so I am going to venture out for the first time since I did not take painkillers this morning. I did have another small bowl of watery cream of wheat and I put a scoop of Protein powder in it...not so good. I am preparing some hot tea to sip while I am out. I will let you know how it goes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
