Recommended Posts

I got my surgery date of May20th (pre-op testing May 6th). I AM SO EXCITED THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING, IT ALMOST SEEM SURREAL! I have waited 5 years for this. I'm also saddend cuz my familly doesnt support me. I can tell my sister is jealous. She wants to get the surgery too, but her husband wont allow her! WTH! how can you tell someone that wants to do something to improve their health, no! Hmph! maybe that's why I'm single, cuz i would have it anyway! LOL! anyway, cant wait to join the bandsters!!!!! How are other single people dealing with not having family support them? I have a few supportive friends, but I'm only sharing this with a few. Ok gotta go figure out how to get me a ticker now!!!!!

at first my mother was VERY skeptical and it made me upset. i think she thought i wanted an easy way out. now that she understands it more she is much more excited for me! when i met with the therapist she warned me about people being jealous and said that its something that you are going to have to deal with. i would say REMEMBER you are doing this for you , not ur friends or family, YOU!!! hopefully they will come around! Be happy! If you have friends that support u rely on them. or other people who have beebn banded. Its a important choice but i think u are making the right one :-)

Jennifer-congrats on your banding date!!! This is only the beginning. When you have ups and downs you will need support. I made the mistake of giving up for awhile and wasn't losing and stopped coming on here for support. If you do not have the 100% support you need outside of this, at least stay up with this forum for support. I have never met so many nice people that are willing to encourage you through all of the ups and downs of this journey! I am sorry that your family isn't 100% but they will hopefully come around. When i first told my mother she was really saddened and upset but I think she was just upset that I was going to be risking myself to a surgery, not necessarily that i was having the wls. The morning of my surgery-my husband, mother, and mother in law were all in tow and SUPER supportive. but that morning, my husband was taking my day of surgery pictures and said-i changed my mind, i don't want you to do it. I am not taking you-what do you say now? (he was joking with me) and i said well, screw you-this isn't about YOU, its about me and I will have my mom, your mom, or I will drive myself! hahaha. It really is about YOU not them. You have a life to live and no one deserves to be unhappy or unhealthy if they can and want to choose otherwise! My breaking point was my honeymoon when i felt out of place and couldn't take in the beautiful vacation I deserved because i felt overweight, ugly and like i was holding back because of my weight.

good luck with your journey-keep me updated and if you need a friend-I am here for you!! wub.gif

Thanks so much Carrie. I am still excited about getting banded. I told one of my friends that I am obsessed with this forum. Everyday I learn something new. Thanks for your support. I'm sure once I actually get banded I will have more questions. It's still so surreal that I'm actually getting it done. I cant wait to start thge next phase of my journey. This support group is awesome. I'm also thinking about going to the support groups offered by the facility i'm getting my surgery. All in all I'm full steam ahead!!

Congrats on getting banded. I have the same concern and I think that's one of the reasons I dont want to tell a lot of people. What if this doesnt work, then I'm doomed to be fat all my life! Gasrtic bypass is not an option!

Hey, if you click on someone's ticker it should take you to the website where you can set yours up and then got to your edit profile and change signatures to copy and paste your code there.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
