drinking water/liquid intake

Recommended Posts

I am a person who analyses or over analyses everything I am interested in. I am newly banded and would like some information. I was banded on 4/13, can I just drink straight like I normally would or should I only sip my liquids. My concerrn is if I do not need to drink slowly at this point will this change as time goes on. I read people saying they are drinking 64 oz of Water. I am drinking very slowly by choice but I wonder if I am over thinking the water or liquid intake. Again, I was just banded and have no restriction. Thanks

You should probably sip, being you are just one day out, although liquids go right through your band I would take it easy for several days. Good Luck on your Journey!

I started out with the small sips but not I can drink like I normaly would. But want to add I was never a guzzler so it works out for me. I still have trouble with just plain Water. I make sure I get plenty of no calorie fluids but I am ashamed to say I rarely get my srtaight water in. It's been almost 3yrs for me and I'm still having to remind myself of the band rules.

For the first week don't expect to get to 64 oz per day.

Surgeons generally recommend 4-8 oz the first day (the day you have surgery), 12-24 oz the second day, 24-36 oz the third day, 36-48 oz the fourth day, 48-64 oz the fifth day and a minimum of 64 oz per day going forward.

Increasing your Fluid intake slowly gives your body time to readjust. Start with hot tea in the morning, then go for cooler liquids throughout the day, hot broth, etc. If you start your day with a hot Fluid your band will open up a bit and it will make things easier.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
