Tape Measure Moving but Scale Is not

Recommended Posts

I started my pre-op diet 2/17 and was banded on 3/3. Since 2/17 I have lost 20lbs..up until about two weeks ago. However, since 2/17 i've lost a nearly 40 inches from my body..10 inches being from the past two weeks.

What gives?

Anyone else experience anything similar?

body composition changing. i have been through two shifts in measurements. kind of surprising. my weightloss stalled for about three weeks. I had a fill so everything is moving again. I am learning the weight goes then the body shifts. I am beginning to wonder if the plateau we go through is more of our body adjusting to the weightloss. I was really shocked yesterday when i put on a pair of pants that were a 20. i am so used to wearing 28-30.

Congrats on your weightloss!:D

Exactly what becky said. Your body is recomping itself which is a good thing. Inches lost is MUCH better than a loss on the scale as a loss on the scale can indicate Water loss, fat loss, and/or muscle loss. Inches lost represents nothing other than fat loss -- the main goal of weight loss.

Congrats and realize it's a good thing.

It's a good thing for sure! You want to be smaller, not neccesarily lighter, no one can see that lol.

I am in the same boat. I've only lost 20-25 lbs but my measurements have really changed. You would think that it would show more on the scale losing 2 or 3 sizes in clothes. I think everyone who struggles with weight is so focused on the scale...we've just been programmed to measure our results based on the scale. It's hard making the adjustment to not be bummed when the scale doesn't move but when people notice that you're smaller, it's awesome!

I know I should be happy, thank you all.. it's just frustrating. I don't want to be a 5'3" female that weighs 250 and wears a size 16. I know what the scale says and I want it to decrease!! lol

I feel inches lost is a better measurement then the scale... I mean people tend to look at your size then they do how much poundage you lost IMO...

Same here - my weight loss has slowed down quite a bit (to my dismay) - but I have lost 40 inches overall. I do my measurements on the 6th of every month (I was banded on 1/5) so it's VERY important to me to keep track of that - it helps me feel like I am accomplishing something, especially when the scale isn't moving like I wish it would. I have my 2nd fill tomorrow, so I am hoping that kicks it back up a notch :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
