Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to get banded sometime in June, I go to my last pre op appt next week! I am starting to get super anxious that im going to die during surgery or that im going to HATE being banded. Did anyone else get this way a couple of months before the big day?

I know that im being silly and that im going to be just fine, but someone just sympathize with me..please?

I just posted this on another forum but it seems to fit here as well.

First things first, take a deep breath. Yes surgery can be very scary and yes sometimes there are complications but if you are well informed and you fully trust that you have a competent surgeon that will do everything in his power to take care of you, you shouldn't worry about it to much. Of course there are always thoughts in the back of your mind that make you second guess your decision but you are doing this to be a better mom to your kids and just over all a better you.

I look at it this way, the rates of something going really wrong are slim to none. Saying that you don't want the surgery due to the "what ifs" is like saying I won't ride in a car just in case I get into an accident or I'm not going to cross a street because I might get hit. As long as you are educated on what to expect and your doctor has been thorough with you, go for it with your head held high and don't look back. Your kids will have a better life because their mom will be happy and healthy.

My surgery is on Friday and I have butterflies like crazy but I know in my heart of hearts it is what I HAVE to do in order to live my life to the best of my ability. I hope that everything goes smoothly for you and if you ever feel the need to talk message me directly. Hope to hear from you soon.

~Pam

I am in the same boat you are in. My surgery is scheduled for May 4th and I am in full on panic mode. i think part of me didn't think that it would be all scheduled and approved so quickly, that i had sooo much time to truly decide (especially because there seemed to be 1,000 hoops that I had to jump through...now i am through all of those hoops and all that is left is the liquid diet and the surgery..soooo). So here i am, 3 weeks from today I am going to go into that OR and my life is going to change. it may be for the better or it may be for the worse. i am anxious and scared and incredibly unsure of everything, but after talking (and crying my eyes out) with my husband, weighing the pros and cons, I am leaning towards going ahead with the surgery. I have no words of wisdom nor can i say anything to calm you because I am scared out of my wits, but as was stated earlier, at some point, i'm going to have to trust that my surgeon knows what he's doing and he's going to do his best to take care of me and not kill me....and I am going to do my best to stick to the rules and do what I need to do to be in an overall healthier place. hopefully

Hi NotSoSureYet, my surgery is also the same date, but I haven't been nervous at all. Like you said, the hoops we had to jump through were time consuming, consistent and lots of dedication. So to throw that all away wouldn't be the wisest. I am glad that you are leaning towards the surgery. I am actually VERY, VERY excited to get banded. I have had cosmetic surgery before so that's probably why I have not been nervous about this one. I am too anxious and excited to see my weight loss progess to stop and think of the "what if's."

I know you all will be fine and do great with recovery. best of wishes to you all and let's keep each other updated on our surgeries!!

At first I was very excited to be banded. I went threw all the hoops/lifestyle changes and waited... and waited... and waited for approval from the weight management clinic almost 1.5 years in the making (It was when the clinic first started and they were doing trials to see the outcomes so they only had x amount authorized a year). At a routine visit with the dietician I found out I could be banded in 2 weeks and would have to start the liquid diet the next day. That's when the panic set in. It was my first surgery and another major lifestyle change. Then there was the whole I've been fat from little on, everything else I've tried has failed and so on.... I didn't know what to expect.

I had talked with the surgeon on different occassions and he was thorough at explaining the risks/complications and the benefits. I feel that it is an elective surgery (with amazing benefits) and they would not consider someone a candidate if they were extremely high risk, But because it is surgery they have to inform you that sometimes the unexpected can happen. (the surgeon had a lady I know wait until she lost another 20lbs and resolved another issue because he was concerned of possible complications).

I thought long and hard and decided that this was the right step for me to get to where I want to be in life. I wanted to be healthier and be able to move! I was still terrified the day I was admitted for surgery (to the point I kept hitting snooze on the alarm because if I went to the hospital there would be no turning back!).I did make to the hospital though.

Now 3 years later I'm down about 100lbs (had some complications (gallbladder) and was deflated for over a year while trying to sort it out). I don't regret any of it. There has been some bumps along the road but I also see the mountains I've climbed.

Just remind yourself of why you decided you wanted the lap-band in the first place. The jitters will be there but it's just a bigger stair to climb to your version 2.0. Good luck on your new venture!!!!

Hey,

I was nervous and thought about backing out right up until i went to actually have the surgery.

What I will tell you though is that the band is the best thing I have ever done for my self.

Im losing weight and it is amazing, im fitting into clothes I haven't fit into in 2 years.

I wont lie it is hard especially with the post op diet but I would never go back now :)

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
