Weight Loss Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am in the approval process for my lap band surgery...I had my 1st consulation appt, and I am now awaiting my appointment for my EGD. My doctor has requested I lose about 20 -27 pounds before I have surgery, and he said a 1200 calorie diet is best.

However I am having a hard time....trying to lose the weight. I had my appointment on the 4th of April...and since then I have lost about 3lbs. I know the approval process takes some time, but I am feeling like I wont be able to do it, and when my surgery is approved it will have to be pushed back :(

Has anyone had to lose some weight before having surgery? Can anyone offer me any suggestions? PLEASE HELP...I want to be successful :)

Thank You!

Do low carb; you'll drop pretty quick I bet.

Did the doctor request that you lose the weight or did they require that you lose that much before surgery. Bit of a difference.

If they require it, they should have a nutritionist or dietician available to help you. Call and ask for assistance.

My doctor didn't request I lose any weight before surgery and I was very heavy. I have seen this often and wondered what the reason for this is. I have a sneaky suspicion that even if you do not lose all the weight they will still do the surgery (as they want to get paid).

My doctor requested himself.....I am just feeling discouraged...simply because if I could lose 20-27lbs on my own I wouldn't be seeking weight loss surgery :(

I just fear if I unable to lose the weight my surgery once approved will be pushed back " by the doctor" until I have done what he has asked... :(

From what I understood, they wanted a person to shink the liver to make the surgery easier.

I would have a conversation with the doctor. If all else fails, you could find another doctor. There are some who don't require any pre-op weight loss. Mine didn't and I did fine and am doing very well so far with weight loss.

My doctor required a 30 pound loss. I did that in 3 months. I had to postpone my surgery for other health reasons. I ended up loosing 50 pounds before surgery. I went to a seminar for another doctor and he required everyone to lose 15 pounds. One silver lining is that he said 1200 calories my doctor wanted me to do a 500 cal. liquid diet for 3 months. I ended up not following that diet and made up my own. But I still lost the required weight.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
