Pre-surgery diet? Afraid of thrist!

Recommended Posts

I am schedueld to have my lap band surgery in 11 days. I was reading some of the blogs and people talked about having a pre-surgery diet. My surgeon/office never told me anything about having to be on a certain diet before surgery. Where you all on a pre-surgery diet? Also, I am a diet coke-aholic. I know I can not drink my diet cokes anymore but I am so afraid that I am going to be thirsty all the time. You know some times there is nothing better to quench that thirst then to chug a lug a big glass of cold Water or in my case it has been icy cold diet coke. Since the stomach is so much smaller how do you handle not drinking a whole glass of "water" or other liquid all at once to really quench that thirst? This is my biggest fear, being thirsty all the time. Any suggestions?

i'm one of the lucky ones... my surgeon allows carbonated beverages 3 months post-surgery so i still drink 1 diet pepsi a day.

right after surgery you're learning new ways of eating and drinking. you're learning to take small bites and eat slowly and take small sips of drinks.

for me, after awhile, the drinking hasn't been an issue. now, i haven't chugged a 20 ounce bottle of Water at one time but i can take 3 drinks right in a row without any problems.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
