First fill, couldnt find my port, and to do it at hosptial

Recommended Posts

So I went for my first monday, they couldnt find my port, it was too deep. So they rescheduled me for Today. IT had to be done at the hoptial and with "live" xray. They had me lay on the xray table and cleaned my belly, numbed it, then she put the needle in they took an xray and it wasnt in place so she moved it, and they didnt that about 15 different times. I have a crazy amount of needle holes and my belly is so tender. But after getting the needle in place they roatated the table where I was nearly standing. It was a speical table. She put in the saline, and then they took more pictures. Then they had me drink the white chalky crap and took another picture. It was really neet I could see my band and see the stuff backed up inmy throat. and I could see how the food or liquid would have to go thru the band. It really helped me understand how and why this works. And the importance of not eating and drinking at the same time. And not overeating. It was a little nerve racking, I was scared. but it was fine in the end. And it didnt hurt. Im happy with my fill, I dont feel any different on the "inside" or anything but I am super happy im not hungery every 2 hours. I started getting hungery like ever 2 to 2.5 hours last thursday. So I was completely ready for this! I would talk more about it but I super tired. So if you have any questions please ask, I will asnwer anything. I would rather answer with what I know and have been thru then you be nerves or scared becaue you dont know whats going to happen.

Yeah, my fill doctor did the barium swallow thing at six months then printed a picture of my stomach with the Water passing through for me to keep. I still have it hangning on my fridge...pretty cool!

You won't have to go through all that for every fill, will you?

Hopefully no. My doctor passed the port deeper under my fat or Water that way it wont stick out when I loose weight. She said it was somthing she started doing because some peopel were unhappy with loosing weight and then the port being able to be seen thru the skin. But I was too heavy for her to fill the port this time, I expect next time if I need another to not be as heavy hopefully, so the answer the question, No I dont think so.

I am going thru the process and i am soooo ready for this. Are the fills painfull?

For me no, it was not painful it didnt hurt. But it is scarey. People moving all around, there were three people in the room crowed around me looking and poking. The xray guy and my doctor and a student she was teaching. They numbed up my skin, I dont know if all doctors do that.

Sorry you had to go through all that but on the other hand it does sound sort of cool to be able to see the band "in action".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
