NJGirl32 43 Posted April 7, 2011 I had my first meeting with the doctor today! I am nervous and excited at the same time. He wants me to see a gastroenterologist for a GI consulation and clearance. What happens at the office? I thought the nurse said that I may not be able to drive home? I should have asked more questions! Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks! CheckYes 46 Posted April 7, 2011 Maybe an endoscopy? Look that up on the web. It involves sedation.

KristenC 13 Posted April 8, 2011 To be cleared I had an EGD. It was nothing. They knock you out and before you know if youre awake again. I didn't have to do anything else.

Jachut 487 Posted April 8, 2011 I only saw a gastro doc for the first time ever last year for bowel symptoms unrelated to my lapband, but what I'd say is it will be a normal consult, you'll be asked questions about your digestive habits and experiences and if he feels anything needs investigation you'd be booked in for an endoscopy or colonoscopy? I cant see what a GE could do in his office that would affect your banding other than schedule you for further testing if they thought it necessary. I guess they'd be looking for stuff like an ulcer, gallstones, etc.
ElizabethNYC 1 Posted April 8, 2011 Before my surgery I had an EGD which does include sedation and I probably wouldn't of been able to drive home if you asked me too. It was real easy though, they put you to sleep do their thing and you're awake all within about half an hour. AFTER my surgery I had an upper GI where they make you drink the gross chalky stuff and they take pictures of the band. They do this within the first week of your surgery to check placement and make sure all is good. My surgeon said they will use this picture as my base for my Bandaversary to make sure it stays in place and all that.
slm2007 7 Posted April 11, 2011 I think it depends on what you are having. I had an Upper GI and I had no problem driving home...no sedation for that but if they do the endoscope thing, I would recommend getting a twilight sleep vs. relaxation drugs. They put the tube down your throat and I've heard it is not pleasant. They try to control your gag reflex but it is usually not fully successful so you are fighting it back...if you are knocked out, it is nothing to deal with. However, back to my upper gi...they do this to see if you have a hiatal hernia and other problems, I guess. When I had mine, they just made me sip on this icky white chalky drink and a pink chalky drink, roll around on a table and coat my stomach and do some more sips and took a bunch of x-ray pics of my throat and stomach. I was okay with the sips, it was when they told me to drink steadily through the straw I thought I was going to "lose it." They try to make it "sweet" but it is just nasty. It's not painful just icky. I have heard that the one they are going to make me do after surgery is worse tasting than the one I've already had done.....I can't imagine.' Oh, and don't be far from the bathroom afterward either.....
