Post Surgery Food/Vacation Question

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I have a question I was hoping some people who have been banded could help me with!

I found out my surgery date at my pre-op appt yesterday, which is great news. However, it is a little later than I was hoping for - 4/28. I planned a trip a while back (before I started this process) for a weekend getaway on 5/13-5/15 to Celebrate my 30th bday with my boyfriend. I also suspect this is when he is planning on proposing. So needless to say I really want to go on this trip!! We tried to look at other dates, and the summer is really already filling up, so if we can't go on that date it looks like we may have to cancel all together.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they were able to eat real foods at 2 weeks (15 days) post surgery - maybe in a restaurant? I know I would have to be really careful what to order, but I was hoping Soup or something would be fine? My doctors only has me on the mushies through day 14, and then introducing real foods, so it seems realistic from their timeline, but I was wondering what the reality was for other people. I go for my first fill/check up post-surgery on 5/11 so that will be done with before we leave.

Also, it's a Bed and Breakfast that is very accomodating for special diets, so I know my breakfast there (yogurt, fruit) would be fine, and there's a fridge and microwave, so I can bring yogurt, oatmeal, other stuff with me as back up. I was just concerned about going out to lunch/dinner since my boyfriend will of course get hungry at some point :)

Also, I'm assuming by that point I'll be up and around walking, and be able to do an activity, like kayaking or light hiking?

Thank you for any advice/experience you can offer!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
