In India...Band Too Tight...Acid Reflux...Need Helpful Ideas

Recommended Posts

Ok...so a month ago I posted about acid reflux. I went in, got an unfill and felt fine. Now, 1 month later, I'm in India for work. My band is excruciatingly tight again. I think it's a combination of stress, air travel, Water retention. I am eating very little and the acid is unbelievable. I did bring Zantac with me...it's not helping

I'm not sleeping, eating is a struggle...I feel like crap.

Not much mild food here...I've thought, go to liquids, but then...there's water, or juices with acid in them. I don't want to drink milk as I don't trust anything uncooked here.

If I was in the UK I'd go to a pharmacy and buy some boost...but alas...I'm no where near there :(

Anyone have any suggestions to help me through to the 15 April when I go home...and I will go into the Dr to be checked out and likely have an unfill until this calms down

Please....

Can you call or Email your Dr? That is what I would do.

I was instructed to do liquids only when I flew last month. Could you find a pharmacy there and get something like Slim fast or Boost? Surely they must have a similar product?

Good luck!

I would stay bland if that is possible there.

I would look on line for a natural remedy for Acid Reflux.

Do you still have your Gallbladder? If so you might want to have it checked out.

Hope you feel better.

Not sure what kind of foods are there but I'd go with a softer diet--yogurt, Soups, stay towards the liquids. Do they have any kind of Protein Drinks there? This way you'd get nutrition but not have to eat as much.

Hope it helps.

Thanks all...I considered the boost idea...and have been looking for bland soft foods...of which there are not many. I think what I'm going to do is cut the trip short (hopefully not career suicide) and come home...I've been throwing up all night and I think I'm thowing up bits of blood....not good by any stretch :(

I think it's time to go home and get an unfill and let me heal as I know I am sooooo very swollen

Unless you are in the deep countryside ask a member of local management for advice about a good hospital. If you are vomiting blood this is an emergency. Remember it is in your employers best interest to get you emergency healthcare. Worse comes to worse find a local a HR person and tell them you need medical Help NOW.

Okay ... I don't know if this will work but what if yo ordered Boost or Ensure or something from Amazon.com - the "2-day" delivery. I have no clue if it's possible to get that kind of delivery in India ... but I can't see why not. True, my limited (i.e., zero) knowledge of India's postal, UPS or FedEx availability might make my suggestion null and void, but ... it's sounds like you are miserable and I just want to help if at all possible.:D

I do agree that if you are spitting up blood, it's time to find a hospital - fast.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

My first advice to you would be to call your doctor stateside. They will probably refer you to a doctor in India as there are many, many people that elect to have surgery in India (cheaper and many of the doctors there were trained Stateside). After reading your post, I simply googled lapband in India and a ton of info came up. You may simply have gastritis as I've had this 2xs with my band. I had to go to liquids. I could only tolerate Jello. The swelling finally went down after about 5 days and I was relieved! It could be major or minor but you need to find out from a medical doctor! I wish you the best.

Thanks all...I did seek medical advice and received some medications. I'm booked to leave to go back to the UK tomorrow. I'm not ready for the long haul home to Canada, but at least in the UK the food is more bland and there are doctors knowledgable on the lapband.

I'll be calling my fill nurses as soon as their office opens up

Is it not possible to buy fresh potatoes or yams or other fresh vegetables, and have them cooked without spices and then mashed very well?

Thanks everyone for replying, your support and your suggestions. I am still in Bangalore and I'm flying out tomorrow, an earlier than planned departure.

I did get a Dr and was examined. The whole lapband thing here is not very well known. None the less they stopped my vomitting and have not got the acid reflux under control. They left a nurse with me in my hotel room over night which was nice.

I'm feeling so much better. The lady Dr was kind enough to contact a bariatric surgeon and discussed with them my lapband and what they had prescribed to ensure it wouldn't do any damage. This morning I was able to eat, and keep down a small bowl of oatmeal with skim milk. I am on soft foods all day and the hotel has been instructed to craft no spice alternatives for me for the duration of my stay.

I'm very impressed with the care I received in Bangalore...seriously, I was so worried that I would slip the band or something...and now I feel good. Not great...maybe that will be tomorrow :)

Thanks again everyone.

So things started going downhill again. Flew back to Canada and saw my band Dr in the ER. I'm now completely unfilled until my stomach heals

Gee, I hope things improve or have already improved since you posted - sounds like a pretty rough and unpleasant time. the care you received in Bangalore did sound very sensitive to your needs, how nice. Take care and post back when you feel better.

:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
