Telling people about the Lap Band

Recommended Posts

I have a new boyfriend and haven't told him about my lapband yet and I know I need to. He has already noticed how little I eat and that I don't eat bread and a lot of veggies so he, as do most people, will eventually question it. I am embarrassed that I didn't have enough self control to keep the weight off myself. I never had a real weight issue until I had my second daughter at 33...then it was on! I was banded July, 2007 at age 40 and have done very well and met goal for the most part. I'm back to the old me...I just don't like to talk/tell about it. Any suggestions?

That's a tricky one. I think anyone has the right to remain private about their surgery, if they want to. But if it's a (potential) loved one you're talking about, you should probably tell him about it, if only in the name of "full disclosure." He needs to understand that you struggled with weight issues for a long time, and finally decided you needed some help losing the weight permanently. And it's working well for you. Explain that you're very private about it, so want to keep it just to yourselves, but that you wanted him to know the whole story, so he wouldn't think you had some sort of eating disorder. ;)

Good luck!

Dave

I didn't think I would tell anyone, but I ended up telling many friends/family. Its ended up being no big deal and most are positive. I find it easier to tell sometimes, just takes any pressure off. I had to help myself and what others might judge I don't really care about. No one walks in my shoes...........no one knows better than me it was the right thing for me to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
