I feel like I am myself depriving of food so i binge eat

Recommended Posts

Eat more. Eat the foods you binge on in smaller amounts. Don't deprive yourself. I eat chocolate, kids Cereal, ice cream...there's no point to cutting out any foods unless you cannot tolerate them due to your restriction level. Eat them in moderation and you'll be fine.

Therapy with someone who specializes in eating disorders may be something to think about. You may uncover reasons you overeat. Is there a weight loss surgery support group in your area? I attend one and find it helps a lot. Good luck!

If you truly are 'binge eating' (which is different than just overeating) then, like anorexia, it is a mental illness and needs to be treated with therapy. The best thing you can do is see a therapist because it doesn't get better on its own. I wish you well.

I don't deprive myself of things. At work sometimes I crave m&ms but instead of going downstairs to the vending machine and getting a regular bag, I go to the front where they have those 25 cent machines and just get those. And as much as I want more sometimes (though I'm usually fine with those) I don't go back for more. I say all in moderation, which is one reason o got the band, I did not want to forever not have chocolate again. Have I gone overboard on things before, sure, but I try to shake it off and say ok don't do that again

Exactly :) Being banded or having any type of WLS doesn't and shouldn't mean getting rid of food permanently. I did cut myself off of carbs for 6-7 months, but nowadays I eat them like they're nothing.

Yea eat more :) just fill yourself up with healthier choices. Like, I wouldn't be satisfied eating 1 taco.. or 1/2 cup of Pasta. So I fill up on things that are lower calories. I'd rather have 4 turkey meatballs with sauce and cheese, than 1/2 cup of pasta.. Then I don't feel deprived.

I also find low calorie substitutes for unhealthy things, like a bite size sugar free candy bar, instead of a big one. Or fat free frozen yogurt (it's a california thing lol), instead of ice cream. Or a pre-portioned Lean Cuisine pizza instead of slices of pizza from a restaurant. I still eat everything, but I do watch what goes in. If it's too bad for me, I usually don't want it! No food is as good as skinny feels :)

While I don't think it mentally healthy to deprive yourself of a food FOREVER; I do have foods that I can't keep in my house. Childrens' cereal is a trigger food for me. I can eat 1/2 a box in a sitting. Not exaggerating. I can't buy it any more. You may need to set up food plans. If I go to a party I can have a couple crackers and some cheese. Since I am in public I'm less likely to eat a lot of that high cal/fat food. If ate them at home forget it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
