What can we take for pain?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My sister and I just were banded about a week ago. We are doing good so far, but we are having shoulder pain (from the gas I presume). I have heard that we are not suppose to take aleve or iburophen, but would it really hurt? I mean if we didn't tak eit all the time just every once in a while? Also can anyone suggest anything for us, tyllenol has just never seemed to work for either of us. I am a person who depends on aleve during that time of the month. I really need a solution before that time.

Thank You

Gretch :help:

I was told tylenol by my surgeon. However, since that doesn't work well for you both, try asking your surgeon. Sometimes, surgeons will make exceptions, depending on amounts and conditions.

I was told that my only options were tylenol or narcotics (we were talking about back pain at the time). I would talk to your surgeon... I know some people take ibuprofen very occasionally but you are both newly banded and you want to avoid irritating your stomach right now.

IMO, I don't think pain meds will help with the shoulder pain. One theory is that it's caused by gas, another is that it's referred pain caused by the band rubbing on the diaphram. Either way, I think it's just something that you have to let run it's course. Try walking as much as possible and using a heating pad - it's supposed to help.

How cool that you were banded with your sister! Hope you're both feeling better soon.

They do not want us to talk NSAIDS (motrin, alieve, ibuprofen) because these medications can cause stomach ulcers. I do not think that once in awhile would kill you. However, I did have to sign a contract for my surgery stating that I would never take NSAIDs again. I to was totally addicted to motrin for my periods. Now I just suffer. I think tylenol sucks it does nothing by bring a fever down in my book. I also use a heating pad.:sick

I was banded on 12/22 and my Aunt Flo made her first visit since my surgery. I get cramps, usually nothing too bad, but still enough to make me take something. I certainly miss ibuprofen, and tried regular tylenol, which didn't do much. Luckily, I had a tylenol with codeine pill left over from a root canal. I think I may go and ask my surgeon for a 'script for tylenol with codeine for those times of the month when regular over the counter just won't do.

Also, once in a while breaking the rules might not hurt, but you never know. Try to follow the Dr.'s orders as much as you can.

I have psoriatic arthritis so I live with pain quite often. I get Ultracet for pain. My GP and surgeon agree it's a good choice because it doesn't affect the stomach and it isn't as addictive as the Opioid Narcotics.

Talk to your doctor about a prescription for tramadol. It is a non-narcotic pain killer and is not a NSAID. My surgeon said tramadol would be ok to take. Once when I was in severe pain for months from a medical problem, tramadol saved my life. It works for everything and is excellent in my opinion.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
