I must be doing something wrong

Recommended Posts

I had the lapband surgery about 2 years ago. I started off losing weight pretty well, but then I got seriously burned and was put into the hospital for almost a month. While I was in there, the doctors had to take the Fluid out of the band in order for me to be able to consume more food and nourish myself back to health. I have been back to my bariactrics doctor a few times and they have replaced some of the fluid. I don't know what it is, but I am still able to consume about the amount of food I was able to before the surgery. My weight loss has leveled off, and I haven't been losing any weight for a good while now. I haven't gained any, which is kind of good, but I also haven't lost any. My total loss so far is about 80 lbs. I probably need to lose about another 100 to get to my goal weight. My knees and back have started hurting very badly, and I am pretty sure it is because of my weight. I don't know what to do about this. I would appreciate some advice on this.

Sorry you are having to "restart" but it sounds like it's just going to take some more trips to the doc to get to the right fill level again. I've heard of people who have had to be unfilled for one reason or another often can't just go right back to the previous fill level and get the same level of restriction-- it takes messing around with, just like in the early days after surgery.

It sound's like you just hit a platue it happen's to all of us. You have to remember that a pound of fat burns 2 calories an hour so when you lose 80 pounds your burning 160 calories less per hour (I know it sucks) but that's why we hit platues! However, the good news is that a pound of muscle burn's 6 calories an hour so my suggestion is to hit the weights! Adjust your calorie intake and make sure you doing cardio too! However, remember to few calories will put your body into starvation mode and make it equally hard to loose weight as to many calories. Get a journal and keep track of what your eating and your daily calorie intake! Most importantly don't get discouraged; just keep at it because one day you will get on the scale and the pounds will be moving again:)

But are you hungry? The band was not designed to restrict food (even though many surgeons 'sell' it that way). Some people do get physical restriction, but at the cost of constant stuck and sliming episodes (yes, there are exceptions). It was designed to put pressure on the vagus nerves which tell the stomach to stop producing ghrelin, the hunger hormone. If you're hungry after eating a reasonable meal (according to my surgeon that's 3 oz of Protein and 1/2-1 c. vegies), then it's time for a fill.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
