Surgery Day is tomorrow 4/5

Recommended Posts

Well, tomorrow morning @ 7:15, my new life begins. Right now, I'm really not all that nervous. I think having already been thru 2 lower back surgeries and a colonoscopy has kept me from having any surgical or anesthesia anxieties. I did throw up after the 2nd back surgery in 1998, so I'll remind everyone of that again tomorrow. I'm already almost 20% of the way to my goal of losing 100 pounds. I'm going to have to look around on the net the week I'm off from work for some new clothes. I'm also a Type 1 diabetic. I'm looking forward to not having to change my pump cartridge everyday now. My daily dosage should drop dramatically. I'm not excited about the 2 week liquid diet post-op..The only thing I'm nervous about is having a low blood sugar and trying to counter it with just liquid.< /p>

I am having surgery tomorrow also. I am not nervous either...just excited and ready. My clothes are already a bit baggy too! Isn't it a wonderful feeling? Good luck!

I'm with you all - surgery is tomorrow at 9am. I'm not scared, although I'm not looking forward to the healing aspect. I wish I could just skip right through it all and already be on solid food and losing steadily :)

Good luck to us all!

Best of luck to you! If you made it through the liquid pre-op diet, I would think after surgery should be easier!

My surgery is at 2pm tomorrow, which will require me to stay overnight. Kind of a mini vacation for me since I have 3 kids at home. The hubby will have them all to himself. The thing I'm dreading most is the 2 week post op diet. I've never gone under so that makes me a little nervous too but mostly I'm excited. Good luck to all of you!!

My surgery is tomorrow also, at 10am. A few days ago I was having some anxiety issues about it, but as it gets closer I have become more excited about my new life. Now I am just impatient and want to get the show on the road. Good luck to everyone!!

I might have been one of the lucky ones in that my pre-op diet was not all liquids. For lunch and dinner, I could have greens, 1/2 cup veggies, and 3 oz lean Protein or I could have a frozen meal like lean cuisine or healthy choice. I could snack on freebies like celery or radishes. 2 weeks of broths instead for lunch and dinner doesn't have quite the same appeal. LOL

Oh I see what you are saying then - and I am incredibly jealous ;) Mine is going to be all Protein shakes and 2 very small "snacks" per day - like 2 ounces deli turkey or a very small fat free yogurt. I guess I can be grateful though that it is only for 1 week, most of the books I read said two.

I'm sure you'll do great though - best of luck!

Let me wish all of you great success with your surgeries! You're ready, you've worked hard to get to this point, and now it's time!! Good luck!

The best advice I can offer is to remember what you've been told about getting up and moving as much as you can. Walking helps a great deal to reduce or eliminate the gas pain after surgery. Gas-X strips are excellent helpers. Sip liquids till you think your eyeballs will float. If you feel the urge to cough, do it - there may be Fluid buildup in your lungs from the surgery anesthetic. The sooner you get rid of the excess Fluid, the better you'll feel. The postop pain goes away fairly quickly, and you'll be moving ahead to the next phases in no time. Remember that the first weeks after surgery are about healing, not weight loss. So don't panic if your scale doesn't move like you want it to. That'll come later.

Everyone on this Forum is here for you, and many of us have been where you are. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance.

See you on the other side of the recovery room, where we'll make room on the Bandster's Bench for you to sit beside us. Good luck!

Dave

I'm tomorrow @ Noon! Not scared...just ready to get this done and over with, lol. The only thing I'm dreading is the gas pains....which I've already stocked up on Gas-X Strips while they are on sale at Walgreens. They come to $2.50/box at Walgreens till 4/30 if you use the $2 in store Walgreens Coupon + $1.00/off Manufacture coupon on each box. Just a heads up. Good luck tomorrow fellow bandsters!

My 4/5 update: Not so great news

My type 1 diabetes decided to throw a monkey wrench into the situation overnight. I had a low blood sugar at 1:30 AM. I did my best to raise it without eating or drinking anything. Unfortunately, it spiked upwards. I left home at 4:30 am at 253..At 6:15 am at the hospital I was over 400. We tried to get it back down, but just not quickly enough. My surgery was canceled, and I probably will be rescheduled in a month or so. I guess the only bright thing about today is that I reached 20 lbs lost after my 2 week pre-op diet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
