Dr. Oz about WLS Monday

Recommended Posts

I don't care if they have 50 pounds to lose or 250 pounds...I'm not in a position to judge whether or not they should get the band. Statistically, the ones who do best long term seem to be the ones who have less to lose so if that's the case, by all means do it early before the really horrible eating habits set in. Let's face it...at one time we all were *only* 50 pounds overweight...and look where dieting got us. Wouldn't it have been nice if we'd had help early on?

.

So true. I agree with what you said. I guess another plus would be much less excess skin issues to deal with.

Agreeing sorrowfully as I look down at wrinkly legs, bat flaps on the arms and we won't discuss the 'girls' who, if they continue to droop will be on talking terms with my knees.

I was contacted by Dr. Oz producers a while back. I think they got my name from here, since I wasn't on any other WLS forums or sites. Anyway she asked me to email her my story and she would get back to me ASAP about "an upcoming episode on the lap band" I guess this was it and I missed the episode.

I emailed her my story, but she never contacted me (ASAP or slow) LOL

I was excited to tell my story but who knows what happened!

I will watch the episode on my lap top!

Thanks for posting, Joleen

I agree, this is what kind of disturbed me....she was six months out and eating spoonsfuls of "mushies" and broth! Her surgeon must be crazy if she is that restricted. I was sitting there with my husband (who is against me getting this surgery) with the hope that would enlighten him and all he could say was "see that is all you're gonna eat, just do that now"....first, duh, I'd be starving if I did that now without a band, and second, that is not what my doctor is recommending after six months of surgery. I think that part was a bit deceptive but I'm glad Dr. Oz kinda seemed in the corner of lap band surgery! I was pleasantly surprised but that.

I'm doubting that is what she eats.. she's only lost 50lbs in 6 months. I'm sure if would be much higher if that is all she ate laugh.gif

@ElfiePoo Yea to each their own, if they wanna do it fine. I don't see any harm in it. I just feel like it's a HUGE expense and a lot of work to lose 50lbs.

Gosh, you just have the best way with words sometimes! "at one time we all were *only* 50 pounds overweight" - AMEN. I really just wish I could get it through peoples thick heads that this isn't easy. Actually, if I wanted "easy" I'd probably go for the bypass because I think (for me personally) it would get the weight off faster and would probably train me faster (dumping syndrome and all) to watch what I eat. This band is not an easy way out and I guarantee that there aren't to many people that woke up one day and said "OOps, I'm fat, how about surgery." I don't think that a "skinny" person would be able to live with the restrictions a band puts on their lives. I'd like for them to try and see how "easy" it is!

I remember oh so well when I only had 30 pounds to lose. I told myself at one point, "If I hit 150, I'm joining Weight Watchers"...and I did. Then I lost 20 pounds. It came back....then I said..."if I hit 175, I'm going to join jenny craig this time" and I did. This time I lost about 40 pounds and it came back. Then I said to myself "I'm never going to hit 200 and if I do, Bariatric Center"....and I did and I only lost 30 pounds and of course it came back and brought more friends with it like it always did! I said "If I hit 250 I'm just going to jump off a bridge"...well, I couldn't do that because I was pregnant and my son changed my mind about the bridge....but never lost the baby weight and here I am...getting surgery on April 18th. I'm done and I am glad that help is out there now sooner than later.

I am looking forward to this journey and ElfiPoo's continued words of wisdom....

I didn't get a chance to see the show, but I hope to view the "snippets" posted on Dr. Oz's site in the near future, but really, his associates could have found people that more realistically represented how much a bandster can eat and what types of foods are encouraged. If I saw the amount of food visually these 2 people eat in a day I would never have had the surgery!

I can eat 3/4 of a patty melt at the local restaurant and be full. Toasted bread and all. People that do not know I have been banded would never notice that I have been. After this show, the ones that do know and have seen the show will wonder if I still have mine!

I feel very isolated from the negativity concerning obesity, that is until they post some stupid article on msnbc about obesity, WLS, and research findings about the two. Then the comments to the article reveal the ignorance and downright cruelty of people that don't honestly have a clue to the mental aspects of having issues with food and food addiction. I guess in the end I always feel like I have the last laugh in regards to the naysayers. It worked for me and I couldn't be happier. (And regarding the post of Oprah blasting her audience members who have had WLS, she should count herself lucky I wasn't in the audience - I would have gave her a earful!)

I watched the show I think they could have had more info on LapBand. That girl that only ate the yogurt had been banded 6 months ago. There is no way she would be healthy on just that amount of food.< /p>

I think they were trying to give examples of different stages of the process and didn't explain it clearly. When the other lady got ready to go I heard her say that is for the soft food stage...and Dr. Oz was like okay...lol!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
