Dr. Oz about WLS Monday

Recommended Posts

Saw a preview of Dr. Oz's show for Monday's and it is suppose to be about weightloss surgery. Not sure if he will talk in favor of it or against just wanted to pass that along.

Just set my TIVO, thanks! Curious to see if it is pro or con? .... Just have to make sure none of my family see it if it is "con" - - - they are fighting me on this as it is, I don't need to add fuel to the fire.

I just posted about this on another thread. Oz invites these people on and then sandbags them. He doesn't allow them to really go into any explanations and he makes what he says look very reasonable while using excess exaggeration to make his opponent look foolish. His producers say this is because "after all, this is just entertainment." I wouldn't get my hopes up that this will be any different.

My surgeon will be on the show today! Dr. Shawn Garber. His website says he will be featured on the Dr. Oz Show as an expert, discussing the LAP-BAND® procedure. We'll see how it goes!!!

What got me on the previews is they showed the 5 Tablespoons of food. We eat more than that. And the food we eat may be smaller portions but it counts more in nutrition than others eat. We have to have a hgher Protein and lower starch/carb ratio. I have not decided if I want to watch the show or not. The previews did not give me a good outlook on the show. I am just so thankful for this surgery. because with my health the way it was going was headed toward a wheel chair. so blessed! Everyone have a great day!:D

not sure why every one of your posts i see is incredibly negative. maybe i'm just seeing the wrong ones, not sure.

i find dr. oz to be pretty balanced and fair. i am a tv producer and can instantly spot bs. the man is not going to do things on national tv that will cause him to get his medical license yanked. he has to be careful about the advice he gives. will check it out. thanks for posting the notice.

I hope they don't say the lap band doesn't work - I'd hate to have to gain back all this weight! LOL!!! :D

Way funny comment, Dave.

I watched the show and thought that Dr. Oz did a fair job of putting forward the works of the band and band surgery and interviewing the two guests that are contemplating LB surgery. What I did think was not a realistic portrayal of the "norm" was the amount of food eaten by the two guests that have had LB surgery. Not saying what they laid out on the tray is not what they eat on a daily basis...just saying I doubt it is the norm. The one showed that she ate maybe 4 small teaspoons of yogurt for BF, 1 cup of broth for lunch and what looked like 4 small teaspoons of pudding for dinner. By far.... way less than I eat on a daily basis almost 3 yrs out.

I agree that what they ate isn't the norm. 4 tablespoons of yourgurt and broth? Where's the protien? In my experience, I have never felt full on such little food. I did think Dr. Oz did a good job presenting the pros and cons.

I totally agree with you, I was starting to think I was eating way too much. She must be really tight or have the tiniest pouch I ever heard of. But it was a good show!

Also just a note about Elfiepoo, when I post something I always hope she comments on it. I respect her opinion as someone who has lost a lot of weight and seems very knowlegable and open minded.

I set my DVR. I saw the commercial the other day.

I feel like I could eat less food, and still not be hungry, but there is no way my mind would be satisfied with 4 tablespoons of food. That's what I ate on the liquid diet haha... maybe that is what they meant?

show was good and informative. good job on presenting both sides of the new fda rules for people 50 lbs or more overweight (which i'm in that group). the person opposing the new fda rules was only a phd, not a medical dr. but yeah, the amt of food the banders showed they eat was ridiculously small. i don't think that's the amount most people eat.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
