I have kept it a secret that I am having surgery this Thurs. except for my DH and a very few friends (3). The rest of my family does not know, they would not be supportive at all. They do not know until now that is. One of my friends that knows it is a secret posted "sending you prayers and good wishes for your surg and a quick recovery" UUUUUUrrrgh. How have others delt with unsupportive family. Thanks

You have to make yourself happy. They do not know that it is frustrating to lose and gain the same weight over, and over again. It may sound shelfish, it's about me getting better and healthy for me. As for me, my boyfriend wasn't supportive, but this is not for him. He doesn't have to deal constant back pain, GERD, and knee pain. Social life has come to a halt. I let him say what he want to say, but goes in one ear and out the other. Good luck on your journey and keep your head up to the sky.

Yep.. in one ear and out the other. Don't let it get you down and if they can't say anything constructive tell them you don't want to discuss it with them. This is about you, being healthier, not being thinner... being healthier!!! The thinner part is a bonus! Best of luck to you on your journey!

I use good old AVOIDANCE! Avoid them all until after surgery. Ask your friend to delete her comment. :)

Sorry you are dealing with this. I would do as one poster said, ask your friend to delete the comment or delete it yourself if you can! Otherwise if they do find out, what can you do? Just explain this is your choice, it's been a long time in the making and you hope they will be supportive. If others choose not to support you in getting healthy, that is there problem, not yours. I hope it all works out for you! Good Luck on surgery day!! :D

Reply to her post that she must have posted on the wrong person?

I kept my surgery a secret from my family until a week beforehand, just knowing they would not be at all supportive. My dad was scheduled for a knee replacement the same day, and when it got canceled I decided to let my family know (imagining it'd hurt them that I was going under general anesthesia without telling them and they found out kwim?)...to my amazement they have been nothing BUT supportive. My mom even drove me, stayed there until it was time to go them drove me home. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
