Drinking before and after eating

Recommended Posts

I drink right up to about 5 minutes before I eat - and I agree with the above, I usually drink something warm, like a cup of tea, because it will open me up a little. I wait about 30-45 minutes after. I find drinking enough is the most difficult thing for me. I can't drink cold things quickly at all. I drink a lot of caffeine free warm tea.

Meal wise, I don't get the snacking personally. I find that, for me, it kind of ruins my meals. I have a Protein shake in the morning if I work out but then eat 2 other meals - at about 12:30 and then at 6:30. I do a snack if I am having a bad day getting in enough calories or Protein.< /p>

Yeah, I never understood the before part. What does it matter if it's before? Water goes right though the band instantly. When I go out to a restaurant I get a Water to sip on before my meal comes, and when my meal comes, that is it. I don't drink any more of it.

I'm not understanding why they say no liquids before meals.

Ok - I get the before thing because I am so tight at this point that nothing ever goes RIGHT through. It takes a couple of minutes for anything, even water, to clear from my pouch. This is why I give it 5 minutes....

Yes, but can you drink as fast as you used to?

Most days, I could. On a few rare occasions it would rebound and come right back up and out my nose.

My Dr. and Nutritionist told me that I should stop drinking 10 minutes before I eat anything, and then wait 10 minutes after I eat. And this has worked good for me, no problems. But sometimes I am just too full from eating, that I can't drink anything, even if I wanted to.

I was told no drinking 15 minutes before a meal or 45 minutes after. Today was the first time I had to do this, it's harder than I thought!

The thing about this is that they tell us because EVENTUALLY you can't do it. Like they tell you to eat slowly from the beginning, but eventually you can't eat quickly. They tell us to not drink after you eat and eventually, you physically CANNOT. These rules are only rules in the beginning because they want you to practice. Eventually, they become self-evident and heavily dependent on your own body.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
